Most of the desks had a flat top and an opening at one end where you could slide books inside. A few desks look different. They were big and old. They were made of wood and had slanted tops. The tops opened upward like the top of Priscilla's toy chest. Priscilla watched a boy put his books inside one of those desks. He lifted the desktop high.
"Wow!" thought Priscilla. " I would like one of those desks with slanty tops." She looked around the classroom. She saw an empty desks near the blackboard. It has a flat top. She saw an empty desk near the front of the room. It was big and old. It was made of wood and it had a slanty top. Priscilla hurried to the desk. She pulled out a chair and sat down.
"Hey!" said a voice.
Priscilla turned. Beside her stood a curly-haired girl. She wore a ruffly dress. The name on her name tag was too difficult for Priscilla to read. " you will have to move," said the curly-haired girl. " this desk belongs to me."
Priscilla felt uncertain. Then she felt mad. "this desk empty when i sit down," she told the curly-haired girl. Priscilla opened the desk. She put her pencil case inside. Beside it she put her lunch box.
"this desk is mine."
The curly-haired girl looked at the pencil case. She looked at the lunch box. She smiled a snakey smile at Priscilla." We could share this desk. Sharing would be the fair thing to do."
"I don't want to share," said Priscilla. The curly-haired girl poked her in the chest." Let me share this desk, or I tell Ms. Cobble you are being selfish."
Priscilla pushed the curly-haired girl's fingered away." All right. But just for now."
