Moore's law held true, and with exponential technological breakthroughs, humanity soon saw themselves beyond the gravity well of their home star. Within decades, a flourishing interstellar conglomerate of corporations seized the profit potential of the mass exodus from Earth and the solar system.
It was not long before the limits of travel had been reached, and once again humanity was trapped by the impassable wall of scientific ignorance; and once again individuals clamored for every morsel of power within grasp. Without fail, humanity fell victim to its lower impulses and skirmishes broke out between those with, and those without. As with all population functions, the few were consumed by the many, if not by choice then by force. Though in reality the two surviving factions were melting pots of thousands of independent cultures, religions and political systems; all pledging to either the old Earth nations under an organization known as the Senate or the Conglomerate; a massive amalgamation of thousands of corporations spread across the outer systems.
For nearly a century, an uneasy truce held the two superpowers at bay; a truce that was never meant to last.
Everyone thought drones and cybernetics would have taken on the battlefields of the future - human life, after all, is so precious.
Everyone was wrong.
When an interstellar resource war broke out among the Conglomerates and the Senate; the constituent corporations of the Conglomerate found themselves outmanned and outgunned. What they lacked in manpower, they made up in production potential of every kind; including an illegal human biotechnology industry that fed a ravenous cloned-organ black market.
Warfare is ubiquitous with humanity. Violence, pervasive and entrenched in the psyche of every person ever to live. The inevitable truth of any culture is that strife will come.
To survive, one must not do what is right, but what is necessary; a truth that is rarely shared by those who are not faced with the burden of leadership, and who have never witnessed the calamity of combat.
The Conglomerate was deliberating on a scientific breakthrough that could turn the tide of the war, but like splitting the atom, the decision to implement this technology would forever change the course of human history.
