I remember the first day of the outbreak as if it were yesterday. The date was May 15th 2017. It was only a week away from my birthday. My name is Johnathan Cartier, and for a long time I thought I was just a normal semi quiet kid in Richlands North Carolina. The day of the outbreak started almost too perfect. The sun was shining, birds were chirping and my girlfriend Kylie was waiting for me at the breezeway. I gave her the usual hug, followed with the normal kiss. It was around second period that everything started to get weird. I started hearing a strange buzzing noise in my ear. It was manageable at first but as it got louder my head started to pound. Finally I asked if I could use the restroom. When I got into the bathroom I putting water on my face to relax me. When I looked up into the mirror I noticed a small spark coming from my finger. I looked at it as the spark quickly ignited into a full flame. I screamed and tried to put water on it to kill the fire. The water seemed to do nothing to the flames. About a couple minutes passed before someone came rushing in to see what was going on. One of the teachers came in with a fire extinguisher and sprayed it onto my now fully ignited hand. As the foam covered my hand the teacher stopped to check if I was okay. Once the foam faded I saw the flame was gone. I was sent home so I could go to the hospital. When I was there the doctor was surprised to tell us that no burns could be found on my hand. They questioned me for hours to see if I had been doing something I wasn't supposed to. The whole ride home there was only two things I could think about as I looked at my hand. How did that fire start, and why did it start only after the buzzing had stopped?
