It seemed like a lifetime ago, but it was only ten years. Gone were the days that he was tall, awkward, and gangly; and she a wallflower through and through.

Instead, in this cold night, where the hints of lingering Christmas season hung in the air, they were trapped - yet again - in a deserted island, just because they lost a bet. Everything felt familiar but the air was full of anticipation. Would he be able to conquer a new challenge: NOT to touch the woman he loved the most and lost; or would he be able to claim what was rightfully his?

"Will you please stop staring into space and help me set-up the tent? It's getting chilly. So unless you want to freeze tonight, tulungan mo na ako dito," a voice from behind said. He would be able to notice that voice anywhere.

He slowly turned as he fixed his practiced smirk in his face.

"Kaya mo na 'yan, Menggay. Maghahanap pa ako ng mga kahoy para tumagal yang bonfire na ginawa mo. Mukhang isang ihip lang ng malakas na hangin, mamamatay agad eh."

"Aba't bastos 'to -". Her nose flared, her eyes turned into slits and just as she was ready to pour out a pile of steam through her mouth, lips met her halfway.

A thousand memories flashed back to both of them, but mostly to that special moment where they did kiss for the first time, right on the same island.

It was not so much as the movement of the lips that felt familiar, but the feeling - their heartbeats slowed to the same pace, their arms automatically moved their bodies closer, and just when they are about to throw caution in the wind, a flash of lightning caused them to be rudely awakened to reality.

Thoroughly shaken, they quickly turned their backs on each other, on pretence of doing anything aside from what they have previously done.

Hearing sobs made him look back at the lady. Of all the things he hates the most, it was crying. He was trying hard to decide whether to comfort the lady or maintain his macho façade, when the sobs grew louder and he caught snatches of the words she's saying.

"Wasn't supposed to.--"

"--Not again, never ever, ever!"

"Are you okay?" Richard can't help but ask. An amused smile etched his face, trying to be friendly, and his signature dimple on fleek. He was stunned when a pair of slippers hit him in the stomach, the other narrowly missing his cheek.

"Tigilan mo ako Ricardo, hindi na ulit tatalab sa akin yang dimpol mo!" A still crying Menggay shouted.

In a flash, gone was the snobbish lady irritated at his mere being. Instead, he saw a young girl of fourteen, who still wears pigtails, tears flowing down the side of her face; because she lost a bet to him, for the umpteenth time.

Just like ten years before, he was rendered speechless with the sight. All his protective instincts have been awakened because he can't bear those tears, especially from her. He heaved a deep sigh.

In his most caring voice, careful to not let his actions offend her, he approached, reached out slowly, and led her into an awkward hug.

He said, "Hey there, sweetie, Come on, you know I hate to see you cry. I'm sorry I know I was out of line. I shouldn't have kissed you."

They were silent for a few minutes, only Maine's sobs were heard. But that seemed to fade, only to be replaced by giggling, then occasionally snorting, and a full-blown, heart-felt laugh was heard, as she moved away from her.

"Baliw ka na ba?" a confused Richard asked to a still laughing Maine.

"I cannot believe you fell for that! You, of all people! Jerald and the gang would laugh themselves silly when I tell them." Maine said, as tears are still present but this time, because of mirth.

"Yeah? You actually believed I fell for that? I know about the other bet. I'm not supposed to touch you so I'll win this thing, along with that trip to Como for two: all-expense paid." Richard said, trying to mask annoyance in his voice.

"Well, HAHA, congratulations Ricardo, dream on! You already touched me, and not even touch, you kissed me straight in my mouth. So therefore, I won the bet! Como, here I come!"

"You don't honestly believe that that qualified as 'touch' for you? Hindi tayo pinanganak kahapon. I can show you what touch means to me. The question is, are you ready, Miss Maine?" Richard said.

He deliberately put his face near Maine's. His eyes turned mesmerizing, a smirk once again present in his face, only this time, it exuded the air of mystery and challenge; posed to the lady in front.

"Well, Mr. Faulkerson, show me what you mean when you say touch, we'll see who'll win the bet." Maine said, reflecting the heat mirrored in Richard's eyes, challenged.

"With pleasure." Richard uttered those two words, as he proceeded to show her what she's awakened in him.
