"So," Foxpaw grinned. "We're both new apprentices then."

"Apparently." Gingerpaw replied. "Though you look more than six moons old."

"I'm almost seven moons," Foxpaw meowed. "But I'm bigger than most apprentices in Waterclan."

Gingerpaw looked over her shoulder as she heard Snowpaw call her name.

"I have to go." she told Foxpaw.

"Okay," the Waterclan apprentice replied. "See you at the next Meeting, Gingerpaw." Gingerpaw was surprised and happy that the other cat had remembered her name. She smiled. "Goodbye Foxpaw."

But as she turned to run after her clan, Foxpaw called out. "Gingerpaw, wait!"

Gingerpaw stopped and turned to Foxpaw. "What is it?" she meowed curiously.

"Umm," Foxpaw suddenly looked nervous. He padded forwards and quickly gave Gingerpaw a lick on the cheek.

Gingerpaw froze, staring at the apprentice.

Foxpaw looked surprised at Gingerpaw's reaction. "Foxpaw..." Gingerpaw's voice was strangled. The cat's display of affection had startled her, but at the same time awoken something within her. A flood of warmth and peaceful joy was coursing through the young cat.

Without looking back, Gingerpaw whirled around and streaked after her clan. The warmth seemed to be spreading outwards from the place where Foxpaw's tongue had touched her fur, and she hated it.
