"Please." - he whispered. "We will fix this. I want to understand you, I - I really do. I want to - "

"No!" - she yelled not letting him finish. "How can you understand me when I don't even understand myself?!"

Silence engulfed them and suddenly you could hear everything; the ticking sound of the clock, small raindrops hitting the window glass, cars coming into life and speeding off down the street.. The moment was suddenly broken by his voice.

"I will try." - he said barely above a whisper, but she heard him. The words echoed in her mind, but she quickly sobered up. She knew better than that. She knew that they would never work out anything, they never did. He couldn't understand her. Not that she blamed him though. It was her fault as much as his, but she needed to put this to an end.

"I can't do this anymore."

"What do you mean ?" - he asked with a wary expression on his face, so she continued:

"You, me, this" - she pointed with her fingers between the two of them - "It's not working." She took a deep breath and started: "It never did. We just kept pretending that everything was fine, but both of us know that it was far from that. I'm tired of our empty promises, I'm tired of trying to make something out of this and failing over and over again and I'm tired of always explaining myself to you. You will never understand me." It was only at the end of her little speech that she realized how her voice rose for at least one octave higher.

He didn't say anything, he just stood there watching her with a torn expression on his face. He knew she was right and that's what hurt the most. It pained him to see her standing there in front of him with a somewhat hopeful look which only proved his earlier thoughts.. she was unhappy and was only hoping to get away from this - whatever it was that they had. Then in the blink of an eye, he nodded his head and turned away from her so she couldn't see the hurt that flashed in his eyes at that exact moment. He was letting her go because that was the right thing to do and he knew it; he was letting her go because he wanted her to be happy and he knew she wasn't happy with him; he was letting her go because she deserved someone better.. And without another word, she was gone. Just like that.
