Chenai wasn't exactly off when she said the meeting was in regards to the parasite, but it discussed other precautions we could take as agents when going to different Vectors, such as not bringing any unfamiliar food to another Vector, in fear of poisoning. It was mostly about keeping track of records, but let's be real here. All of the junior agents were ranging from ages fifteen to twenty. And that age group is not very well known to keep track of things.
Afterwards, I returned to my shared cubical with Mirk to finish our reports. Once that was done and submitted, it was about time to go update my vaccines in the med bed. Mirk was obligated to follow me there. That and he didn't want to get in trouble for not having any work to do since the blame for injuries to agents tend to fall on the aids.
The shots were quick and mostly not very painful, but there were twenty that were required annually, and there were three that were needed every five years, and the five years ended up a week before the others, to I needed twenty three total boosters. That number of injections at once was clearly no that healthy or safe, but it gave Mirk and I an excuse to go home early. Mirk left me in the med bed to get my bag from the cubical and led me outside. Since Gregregory was working still, we had to walk home ourselves, which is only about a twenty minute walk, but it felt longer as the booster side effects started to kick in.
"You know what Mirk?" I asked, getting his attention. "I think we should be paid expenses for having to leave work early. It was a job related indecent, and reminders should be set up through work."
Mirk just shrugged. He never really cared one way or another. Then again, our apartment was paid by the company, and our checks were just deducted from that, so we only had money for clothes and food and whatever we could save up for. We were paid a fair amount. Of course a few junior agents were paid more than us, but that was besides the point.
I began to sway as I walked, and Mirk just ended up hailing a taxi to drive us the remainder of the walk to the building. We even used the elevator for once. We usually didn't, since it was faster to just use the stairs, but I could tell Mirk just wanted to get home and lay me down so I would be out of their way.
I ended up just laying in bed for the rest of the day, occasionally reading text from the giant book I had. It was definitely useful for my field, being like a giant hand written textbook about all the cultures and lifestyles of people in the diverse vectors. It had made itself useful on several instances, including when I had to pass an entrance exam to get a job where I currently worked. But that's not why I was so fond of it.
Mirk appeared at my door not long after we returned home, bringing me the lunch they packed for me and a fresh cup of the distinctive tea I had to drink the night before.
"Please don't make me drink that again," I begged, but Mirk remained expressionless as they placed everything on my nightstand. "Really, just like that?" Mirk then left my room to do who knows what.
I looked over at the tea and slowly slid it backwards, wanting nothing to do with it before returning to the book, flipping lazily through the pages, doing nothing but looking at the pictures. I should have actually been reading, or even organizing, but I wasn't about to start being productive when there was a chance side effect of hallucinations with all the medication in my bloodstream. I wasn't really in the mood to pick up a shirt and find an singing and dancing chimp. I already had fairly weird dreams as is, so taking a nap was a bed idea to me.
Eventually, push came to shove, and I did end up dozing off.
