The dark clouds above began misting on the young sophomore as she was walking home from high school.
"Oh great," she frowned as she pulled the hood to her jacket over her head.
Why did you choose to walk home today? a voice inside her head asked.
Shut up, she thought, quickening her pace, hoping her school books wouldn't get too wet.
The drizzle rapidly turned to a pour and she broke into a run, seeking cover. She slipped on a puddle and stumbled into something hard. Strong arms caught her from falling and looking up, she saw none other than Elijah, the rich model for his father's company, not to mention a classmate every girl in her school had a crush on. Blushing, she hurriedly straitened and backed away from under the umbrella he was carrying.
"What are you doing out in the rain?" he chuckled.
"I-I was on my way home," she stammered, brushing a strand of wet hair from her face.
"Here, take this," he held out the umbrella. "You clearly need it more than I do."
"Thanks," she squeaked, taking the umbrella and mentally freaking out when her hand brushed against his.
"See you around," he waved, smiling.
The girl stood there staring after him till he disappeared in the heavy rain. Did that just happen? Please tell me that that just happened. Her phone buzzed in her pocket, snapping her out of her daydream. She checked the time and let out a cry of surprise, remembering she had to get home to babysit her siblings. The girl sprinted home, keeping in mind she had to return the umbrella Elijah had so generously given her.
Making it home, she set her damp back pack on the shoe bench and removed her wet converse. She gently folded the umbrella and set it against the wall. To her relief, her homework was not damaged and her hurried to her room to change and start homework.
"What took you so long?" one of her younger sisters asked.
"I got stuck in the rain," the girl replied, shutting her room door and locking it.
"Why did you walk home then?" her other sister asked from the other side of the door.
"Because I felt like it!" the girl answered, pulling on sweats and an old t-shirt.
"I want popcorn," her younger brother whined.
"Then ask Mom," the girl suggested, tying her hair back in a loose ponytail.
"But Mom and Dad left for their dinner right as you got here," he moaned.
"Then have your brother make some!" the girl snapped.
Why do they always bug me? she groaned, plopping on her bed.
Her phone rumbled again, it was a text from her best friend:
Did you make it home safe? she read. The girl smiled, glad to know at least someone was concerned for her.
Yes, she replied, and something else happened on the way. I'll tell you tomorrow.
I'll be waiting.
The girl stayed up till eleven getting homework done and was awake for another hour, planning how to give back the umbrella to Elijah without drawing any attention. Who knows what kind of trouble she could get into by just being seen talking with the boy of every girl in the school's dreams. He was cute she'll give him that, but she never wanted to be in the spotlight. Besides, who would want someone like me? she sighed and drifted off to sleep.
Next day, the girl walked into the classroom, greeted by some friends of hers and even Elijah waved at her. She smiled back. Her face felt warm for the rest of the class and her eyes drifted between the teacher and the back of Elijah's head.
"So, what were you going to tell me?" her best friend asked.
The girl then told her of her encounter with Elijah and mentioned the umbrella.
"You're so lucky! I've never gotten that close to him before."
"It wasn't really on purpose, I was kinda clumsy."
"Still, most girls our age could dream about even standing next to him."
"Anyway, I want to return it to him but he's surrounded by all the snobby brats right now," the girl breathed.
"Just wait till after school, I'll stand nearby so you won't be so uncomfortable."
"Thanks."
"No problem."
Sure enough after school, he outside with another guy, with no girls in sight. She brought out the small, black umbrella and walked up to him, her face feeling hot. She froze halfway, looking to her best friend, who gestured for her to take a deep breath and gave her a thumbs up. Taking the advised deep breath, the girl made her way to Elijah, who noticed her walking up.
"Hey, it's the little Rainwalker," he smiled.
"Hi, here-here is your umbrella, th-thank you for letting me borrow it," she held out the umbrella.
"Wow, this is the first time a girl gave something back I lent them," he said in awe, taking the umbrella from her hand.
"It is?" the girl asked, surprised.
"Yeah, normally they would freak out and act like its gold. It gets old after a while."
"Sorry to hear that."
"Eh, it's nothing really," he shrugged.
"Okay, well, I've gotta go so-"
"Wait!" he put a hand on her shoulder and she stiffened. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you, it's just-" he rubbed the back of his neck. The girl waited patiently for him to gather his thoughts.
"I want to know your name," he finally blurted out.
The girl smiled, "I'm Jane."
