A Philosophical Birthday

You rubbed your eyes, your phone screen being a bit too bright in the dark.

You were reading until late night, like always.

You knew you had stuff to do tomorrow and such, but you couldn't really care less. You were used to it.

While you were getting to the good part, your screen went blank, and then screen with Namjoon's face appeared with a green telephone button.

Why the heck is he calling so late...?

You picked it up anyways.

"Namjoon? Don't you gave a concert tonorrow? What are you doing up so late?"

A chuckle was heard on the other end.

"It's not like I haven't pulled an all-nighter for three straight days."

You sighed.

"Why did you pick such a reckless job of being an idol?"

"I like it. Anyways, I wanted to talk to you about something, go to your window and look outside."

You scoffed. "What? Are you out my window?"

Namjoon laughed. "Just do it, you know I can't be there, you idiot."

You rolled your eyes even though he couldn't see and stood up from your bed to open your window to look out.

"Oh, Namjoon! What are you doing out here in the cold?" You dramatically said into the phone.

You heard a chuckle again.

"Stop acting. I'm miles away from you."

You grinned. "What am I supposed to be looking at?"

"Look up."

"To the sky?"

He hummed a yes on the other line.

"What am I supposed to be looking at? The nonexistent stars because of all this light pollution?"

"I mean, it would be better if there were stars visible, but my main intention is the sky."

You looked up at it.

"What about it?"

There was a breath.

"Do you ever wonder if the sky has an end?"

Is this one of our deep talks, now?

"But, how could it have an end? Its like the earth, there's no end of it, it's just round."

"No, but... The earth does have an end. It starts at the center, and the surface is the end. But the sky... When does the sky stop and start becoming outer space?"

You bit your lip in thought. "You're right... That's a question I guess I haven't wondered on."

You could hear a small outtake of a breath of smile from Namjoon's line.

"It's what I've been thinking about."

"But, you know...? You do, actually, we've talked about this before. Not everything has an answer. Maybe this is one of the things."

"I guess."

It was silent. Before Namjoon breathed in and spoke again.

"There was also something else I had been thinking about."

"...?"

"I've always wondered why people liked birthdays."

You smiled, remembering it was your birthday the next day.

"I never really thought about it," You said.

"I always wondered why people like birthdays when they're getting one more year close to death. And, why people who love them also celebrate it so happily."

You laughed a bit. "Ah- I've heard of that one year closer to death thing."

"Of course you have, it's been the excuse of people hating birthdays ever since who knows when."

"... And... what about it? You said you've always thought, that must mean you think differently, now?"

"I guess you could say I really do appreciate birthdays now."

You smiled, humming, urging him to go on.

"You could say... I realized that birthdays are the day people are born."

You started laughing. "Dude, everyone knows that."

There was slight laughter on the other line as well.

"I mean, it's the day when a human starts existing. When they are brought to this world. The day which made the existence of the person happen. The day which has so much meaning because it's the day when the person was born. The day their life started."

You blinked, the smile still on your face, staring up at the sky.

"How long did it take for you to figure that out, Namjoon?"

"Not long, I just waited to tell you, today. Happy birthday."

You grinned.

"Thank you," you said with utmost sincerity. "And, go to sleep, idiot."

"Alright, alright. I'm going. Goodnight."

"Goodnight."

You put down your phone after ending the call without even looking at it. You just stared out into the sky, seeing small hints of stars.

You would check what time it was, but you didn't need to.

You knew what numbers the digital clock next to your bed held.
