"aww, hello." I said with my face pressed against a glass case. Inside the case sat a small white colored cat, with multiple large black polka dots. He had black ears, but his left ear had a small white blotch. I smiled at him and I swear he smiled back.

Me and my mom had run to a pet store to pick up dog food for my mom's friend Gale. Gale had a pitbull and I'd been trying to make my mom get me a puppy for years, but my mom hated dogs.

My mom glared at me curiously. "Cody?"

I glanced at her and then back at the cat. "Mhm." I said.

She smiled at me. "I don't hate cats." She said.

This took me by surprise, I was generally sure my mom just hated all animals in general. I smiled at her goofily.

"Do you want the cat? I mean I still owed you a birthday present." She told me.

Me and my mom lived alone together and weren't very rich. My mom often struggled to get me the things I needed or wanted.

"Yesyesyes!!!!" I squealed. Then I felt girly so I readdressed her. "Yes, I'd love to have a pet!"

So we got a worker to put the cat in a box with holes and we took him home.

We stopped at McDonald's on the way home and I tried to give the cat a french fry. He took one bite of the salty fry and spat it out. I gave him a little piece of my burger and he ate it happily.

I watched him chomp away at the meat and thought for a small moment. "I think I'll call you Frenchy."

My mom looked at me with a weird face. "Like.... From grease?"

"Grease? What, no. Because he hates french fries, duhh!" I answered.

She gave me a smug look. "I think you should name him Tobias."

I thought about it for a short while. "And Toby for short...."

I hopped up the porch stairs into my house and ran into my bedroom with the box in my hands.

I set the box on my bed and turned to face my dresser and then started to paw through the contents looking for something to wear after I took a shower.

I heard a tiny mew from behind me.

"Oh, sorry!" I turned towards the box. I walked over and opened it and let Toby out.

He stretched his back out and then started to look around my room.

I pulled a light blue pair of pants out of my dresser just as Toby jumped onto it.

He looked at all of the decorations I had sitting on top of it with genuine fascination.

I pet his little head and then walked into the hall to go into the bathroom.

I walked into the bathroom and looked at my reflection in the mirror.

Dark brown hair.

Light brown eyes.

Porcelain skin.

Me.

Something about seeing myself always confused me a little bit. Something in my eyes.... In my glare that was always hiding. I could never see it.
