Chapter 2 - Holding the Gun

The sound of footsteps made her realize that she was still conscious, not only awake and alive, but aware of the sounds of a struggle. Something struck her arm and clanked to the floor next to her. She opened her eyes slowly and turned her head to see that John had wrestled the pistol out of the man’s hand and had him face down to the floor. Taking a breath, Naomi moved her arm to reach for the pistol, but the amount of pain that surged up her arm into her chest made her withdraw her reach. Gasping and holding her arm she glanced down to see that a circle the size of a gum ball had burned its way through her three-size too big jacket. She closed her eyes and then opened them to get rid of the little spots that were appearing. After staring at her shoulder for a moment, she looked to see what had become of John.

          It was a pretty brutal sight. The southern man had him cornered with a large hammer in hand. Naomi could see the exhaustion in John’s face and knew that his fight was coming to an end. Bending down to where the pistol laid at her feet, she gripped tightly and raised its barrel now face its owner. She didn’t dare pull the trigger until John was clear, and since he was facing her direction. His eyes grew large as he saw that she had the gun and was ready to fire it. All the while the man had taken a few steps towards John and must have seen her reflection in his round eyes. He turned around to face Naomi and raised the hammer in the air.

          “What you think you’re doing with my gun?!” he said in a threatening shout. Naomi’s hand shook with the weight of the pistol. He started to advance towards her and before she knew it the gun cracked another round off. Her eyes were tightly shut and she had her head down, still holding the gun.
