A bright flashlight. That's all I see when I wake up in the middle of the night. A bright blinding light in the dark. A man's deep, booming voice comes from beyond the spotlight. "Come on Kat. We have to go before he gets here," he said, an urgency in his voice.
When my eyes adjust to the brightness, I saw a muscled arm that was connected to a broad set of shoulders. Those body parts belong to Hunter Malloy, a guy I just met a few months ago. He's pretty cute with his soft brown eyes and short, chocolate brown hair. And I can't ever forget about his cheekbones. They are as sharp as ice. But we are just friends.
"Hunter! Can't you see that I'm sleeping?" I moaned. "I know. But the feeling I got earlier is getting stronger. I think he is coming for you," he explained. I put my hand up to shield the light that was still shining in my eyes. I looked at the clock that was on my nightstand and the time was 11:30 pm. "What does that have to do with waking me up in the middle of the night, Hunter?" I said after he put the flashlight in his pocket. "You need to get ready to go," he said. I sighed and pulled the covers back over my head. A few seconds later, my blanket was on the floor on the other side of the room. Hunter pulled it off of my bed.
I trembled from the sudden cold of the air. It felt like I had just stepped into the North Pole. Of course it would feel like that though because it is the middle of fall and my heater doesn't work.
I stood up from my bed to get ready to leave and the floor felt like I had just stepped into a bucket of ice water. I stumbled forward from the sudden coldness and I fell into something hard. I looked up and I saw Hunter holding me to keep me from falling on my face. The sudden closeness was very unexpected and I flushed from emarassment and he lightly chuckled. He carefully set me back on my feet and kept his hands on my shoulders. I was only wearing a tank top and pajama shorts so his fingers were warm on my bare shoulder. We stood there staring at each other in awkward silence. Then Hunter cleared his throat to break the silence and I was thankful for that.
Hunter went to my closet and opened the door. "What are you doing?" I asked him as he started rummaging through my clothes. "I'm looking for something for you to change into," he said. I gave him a puzzled look and he went back to searching my closet for clothes.
He pulled a gray hoodie out of my closet and said,"Its gonna be cold so you have to dress warmly." He turned around and started looking for something else. I rolled my eyes. "Gee. Don't you have to dress warmly too?" I asked sarcastically. He looked at me and have me a mocking smile. "No mother, I would rather you be warm. I don't want anything to happen to you. Don't worry about me," he said.
He pulled out my favorite pair of black sweatpants and he lay them out on my bed.He stood there, waiting for me to change into the clothes he picked out and I stood there staring at him, waiting for him to turn around. Realization crossed over his face and he awkwardly cleared his throat. "Sorry. I'll give you privacy," he said.
He turned around and faced the wall while I put the hoodie on and slipped the sweatpants on. "Okay. You can turn around now," I announced. "Do you have any sweatshirts from previous boyfriends or something similar that would fit me?" he asked. Wow. He is finally worrying about himself. "Yea. My cousin gave me a sweatshirt that was way too big on me," I said. He nodded and turned back to my closet.
"I can help you look for it," I said. I walked to my closet to help him look for the sweatshirt. When I got next to him, he looked at me. He didn't look at me like he normally does. It was a different kind of look. He looked deeply into my eyes like it was the last time he was gonna see me. We stood there staring at each other. It was like time had stopped and we were the only ones moving.
