"Kara!"
"I'm coming!" Grabbing my new blue backpack, I quickly slip my jacket on as I hustle down the stairs. I silently walk into the kitchen and glance at my foster mom, Lily. She doesn't notice me as she makes our lunches.
"Kara, hurry up, we're gonna be late!" Covering my ears, I laugh at Lily as she jumps in surprise at hearing me behind her. She places her hand against her chest, slowly breathing in and out.
"Are you okay, Lily?" I ask with deep concern. Lily still holds her hands to her chest, but she gives me a cheerful smile.
"I'm fine dear. You just gave me a bit of a freight."
"I'm so sorry, Lily. I always end up doing that. One of these days I'm gonna end up giving you a heart attack." Lily rolls her eyes. She says I'm too over dramatic sometimes, and she might be right. I know she loves it though.
"It'll be fine, Kara, luckily I didn't drop my new tea set this time."
"That's not fair, you know I didn't mean to. I didn't know you had it in your hands at the time."
"Yeah, yeah. I know you just need to be a bit more careful. I can't afford to break anymore plates or cups." I roll my eyes. It was only one time.
"Okay. Let's go. I'll be late for school if we don't hurry."
"What's with the rush? You didn't want to go a little while ago and now you do?"
"I've got to finish this year and I'll be free from school "
"College honey, remember?"
"Oh, right. Dang. Well let's go. New people and places to go. We can go explore later tonight."
