"Abbie?" I knock on her hospital door. I tip toe in and see her watching cartoons on the tv.
Abbie turns her head in our direction and smiles at us. "Who's this?" She points at Moose.
I grab Moose's wrist and pull him in the room better. "This is my friend, Moose." I grin at her.
Abbie giggles at him. "That's a weird name!"
Moose puts his hand to his chest and gasps. "You don't like my name?"
"Are you Callie's boyfriend?" Abbie asks.
"No!" I blush.
"I would like to be her boyfriend, but she's too good for me." Moose shakes his head sadly. "Callie would never go for a dork like me."
My eyes widen in shock and my cheeks heat up quickly. Does he really mean that or is he joking? Moose is probably just saying that.
"I'll date you!" Abbie suggests grinning. He is so good with little kids.
"Yes!" Moose says happily. "I've got a beautiful best friend and a cute girlfriend." Moose winks at me.
"Are you a dancer like Callie?" Abbie sits up in her bed.
Moose smiles and moonwalks backwards to get some more room. He starts moving his arms and body like a wave. Moose moves his feet really fast and does a Michael Jackson spin.
Abbie starts clapping for him. "Good job!"
"How are you feeling?" I ask sitting on the edge of her bed.
"Tired." She yawns. "My surgery is in a few days."
"I know." I stroke her hair. "You need to get some rest. I just wanted Moose to meet you."
Abbie's eye lids start to droop down. "I like Moose. He's funny."
Moose grins at Abbie's words. "Go to sleep. I'll see you tonight." I kiss her forehead and grab Moose's hand. I drag him out of the room.
"If you don't mind me asking, what is Abbie sick with?" Moose questions me as we step out of the hospital's front doors.
I bite my lip nervously. "Um. Abbie has stage four cancer. She was diagnosed at age five. She has been through so many surgeries since then." I take a deep breath to control my emotions. "The doctors said she most likely won't live to be twelve. Her first doctor said she wouldn't live to be seven. Abbie is eight now. Maybe this doctor will be wrong, too."
Moose steps closer and whips my cheek with his thumb. I didn't realize I was crying. He pulls me in a tight hug. "Abbie is a strong as far as I can tell. She'll be fine."
I step back and whip my tears away. "Can we go dance or something?"
"Sure. I have an idea."
*
"We're going to get in trouble." I whisper as we sneak in the dance studio.
"No, we won't." Moose shakes his head plugging his iPod into the speakers. "The janitor completely believed me."
"Only because you handed him a five!" I point out stretching in front of the mirror on the wall.
Moose chuckles. "It fell out of my wallet." He defends himself.
"Into his hand?" I raise an eyebrow.
Moose picks a song on his iPod and it blares through the speakers. "Show me what you got." Moose waves his hand to the open area of the studio.
"A simple please would be nice." I mumble before dancing to the music.
"Please?" Moose grins at me.
The music starts off slow and I do some ballet I learned from when I was younger. It builds up into some pop kind of music and I recognize it as She's Like A Star by Taio Cruz. I love this song. I dance to the music easily. When I dance, I feel like I'm part of the music. Like the music runs through my veins and my heart beat is the beat of the songs. It's an amazing feeling.
My cell phone starts vibrating in my pocket and I stop dancing. I pull it out of my pocket.
"Tyler!" I squeal into the phone.
"Hey, Callie." Tyler says on the other line.
Moose shuts off the music for me. "How's your tour going?"
"It's great. We have a lunch break right now so Nora told me to call you."
I sit on the floor and smile into the large mirror. "Where are you guys today?"
"Florida. How is MSA going for you?"
"Uh." I glance at Moose who is texting on his phone against the wall. "It's been really great." I grin broadly.
"Who is he?"
"Who is who?" I ask confused.
"The guy you like. There is no way you would like school if there wasn't a guy who likes you for who you are."
Dang! Tyler knows me better than myself.
"Can we talk about this another time?" I ask watching Moose from the corner of my eye.
Tyler laughs. "Is he right there?"
"Yep." I reply.
"I'll call you later. Love ya Sis."
"I love you too." I hang up and see Moose watching me. "That was my brother." I explain.
"I figured." Moose says. "You miss him a lot?"
I nod my head. "Oh ye-"
"What did these two kids look like?" Director Collins voice travels down the hallway into the studio.
My head snaps to look at Moose. We both stand up scrambling to grab our stuff. Moose drops a ten dollar bill on the floor near the hallway door on our way out. We slip through the other door and run out of the dance studio.
"That was close!" I say once we reach the streets. Moose and I look at each other before bursting out laughing.
"Do you want to get something to eat?" Moose asks me once he catches his breath.
"I'd love too." I smile at him.
