"Bye dad, I'm leaving now." I say putting an apple in my bag. "Ava, what time do you think you'll be home tonight?" my dad asks giving me a hug goodbye. After work I have practice, so around, ummm, eight." I say. He nods and waves, "Be safe." I nod. "Oh dad I forgot to ask you last night, are you coaching that volleyball team yet at the high school?" I ask opening the door stopping. "Ya today's my first day with them." I walk out shutting the door, "Good luck!"
It was around seven in the morning, so I'll be on time for work, thank goodness. I walk slowly observing the people passing by. A kid with orange hair on a bike speeds by looking worried. I laugh, he must be late for class. I was sixteen, I have long blonde hair, and bright blue eyes. I stopped going to high school probably in the middle of my freshman year. I had a job offer with a modeling company that pays high money, it was either that or stay in school. Though I did give up school, I could never give up volleyball, I plan on helping my dad with his team, and I'm in a team that plays around, nothing to serious.
Today I wasn't going, but like I said you go just to mess around, it's something I just do for fun. I want to meet the team with my dad and help with it, I hope he'll let me. I open the door and of the giant building and go up and elevator. I'm greeted by Paul, my photographer, "Good morning Ava, are you ready to start the day?" he asks. "Of course, lets get started," I say with a smile.
It was around twelve and I was exhausted, I call my dad, "Hey what's up?"
"Can you pick me up?"
"Ava, we live down the street, are you that lazy?"
"Yes, and there's something I want to talk to you about."
"Alright I'll be there and we'll go to lunch"
"OK thanks." I hang up.
I walk out of the dressing room and say bye to Paul, throwing away my apple core from this morning. "See you in two days Ava." he says as I walk in the elevator. "Alright bye!" I say waving. I get to the first floor and walk outside and see my dad's car, and get in. "Hey where do you want eat?" he asks. "How about the sandwich shop, down the road?" He nods and starts to drive.
We walk in the shop and are greeted by the owner, John. "Ava! You haven't been here in so long how are you?" He says hugging me. "I know that's why I wanted to eat here! I've been good, how are you and Beth?" I ask. "I'm going to ask her to marry me soon, but lets keep that between us. Haha how's the booth over there?" he asks laughing. "The booth will be perfect and good luck, I'm sure she'll say yes, you guys are great together." I say sitting across from my dad. "Thank you and what will you be having, the usual?" he asks already writing it down. "You know it." I say laughing. "And you sir?" he says looking at my dad. "I'll have some tea and a BLT." John nods, "Alright I'll have it to you soon." and with that he walks off to get our drinks.
"What did you want to ask me?" my dad says sipping the tea John got. "Ok, so I know that you're coaching the volleyball team, and honestly, I'm getting bored with the people I'm playing with. Especially since I can't join the school team, so I was wondering if I could be like a manager for the team, to help you, or if they were to get hurt." I say smiling giving him puppy dog eyes. He rolls his eyes, "No need for the puppy eyes." he says. "Well....." I say leaning in. He sighs, "I actually could use the help, Nekoma High School is coming for a practice match soon." I raise my eye brows. "Oh my, is that why you accepted the coach offering?" I ask sipping my lemonade. He nods closing his eyes. "Yes, and I'm anxious to see the team I have to work with. I've been having your grandma run the shop and everything." he says. John drops off my salad, and my dad's sandwich. "Thanks." I say taking a bite. "I'm sure grandma will be fine. And plus with the team, now you have my help, they'll be unstoppable." I say smirking. He rolls his eyes. "Ya whatever, and when you go, bring your gear, just in case we need an extra man or if you want to play." He says. I nod, "Got it."
We stop by our house and grab everything and then head to the school, to ask permission for my help.
*Time Skip*
"Well, since I guess you weren't a trouble child when you were here, they'll let you help." he says lighting a cigarette. I do an excited bunny hop, "I know I'm so excited." I say. We walk to the gym, Takeda meeting us at the entrance. "Hey Ava I heard you were going to help with the team, I'm happy to work with you." he says smiling. "I know I can't wait to get started." I say. My dad throws the cigarette and we walk in.
"Everyone huddle up!" one of them said. A bunch of guys run up to us and listen to Takeda, "This is Ukai-kun, he will be your coach starting today. And this is Ava, his daughter. Ava and I will be helping with the team." I wave and smile. They all had udder shock on their faces, "Your the guy who works at the Foot Hill Store." one says. I hold down a snicker. "That's Senpai to you." Takeda corrects. After a second my dad speaks up, "Alright lets's get started, I want to see what I have to work with. Now, the match starts at 6:30, against neighborhood team. Lets go." They all jump at the thought of a match, and go off to work. A couple of them giving me curious glances.
After a couple minutes my dads friends walk in, I smile thinking back to the training time I've had with them. "I was expecting geezers from a neighborhood association." someone says next to me. I laugh and look over, he was a tall blonde guy, with glasses. He notices my laugh and looks at me with blank eyes. "I wouldn't under estimate them if I were you." I say smiling. He frowns looking at them again, looking deep in thought.
They sort out the teams and begin to play, and to say the least I was impressed. Kageyama and Hinata, holy cow they were a perfect match. I could even see the surprised reaction from my dad. What really caught my eye was the quick back set, he doesn't even look at the ball when spiking, the setter is just so good at placing. The defence wasn't to great besides the short guy, and the ace had a great spike. Before I knew it Hinata got hit in the head and Kageyama was arguing with him. I walked away from the score sheet and when were told to start packing up. Everyone looked disappointed and so I went up to I believe the janitor. "Wait till we finish the match." I say. "But its late and..." I interrupt, "I will take full responsibility for closing up." He shrugs, "Fine." and walks away.
After a while they finally finish and I help close the gym. I go around and learn the names of the players. They were all very nice, well besides Tsukishima. He was scolding when ever I looked at him, he'll warm up to me soon enough, I hope. He acted as if he didn't want to talk to me or he was busy. I laugh to myself, maybe he just didn't like me.
