Before time, there was a wolf. He was tall and strong, his thick black coat able to trap heat from his own breath. His claws were sharp enough to carve stone and his teeth so pointed they stabbed the night sky. When he spoke his words could be heard from the heavens. However. There was no one to hear him. The was alone, and only the bitterness of the constant winter outside his cave kept him company.
One day he heard the light treading of snow. A little white rabbit ran into the wolf's cave. She seemed to be made of snow herself however the pink of her nose and hazel of her eyes assured him she was real. She was trembling from the cold and could hardly move. This was remedied when she saw wolf in front of her and hop carried her to rock she could hide behind.
" Where did you come from?" The wolf asked her. She merely attempted to burry herself deeper into the ground with minimal success.
" Please!" She squeaked. " Don't eat me!"
" I'm not going to." He said as softly as he could.
The rabbit perked her ears up and looked up at him. He dwarfed her as would a star to a moon yet she seemed to be the largest thing he'd laid his eyes on. She was beautiful to the point where no matter how in detail he could go on about her shining eyes that shone brighter than the sun or her fur that seemed to be made from clouds, nothing would do her justice in anyones mind.
As they spoke they became friends. They depended on each other. She told him that before she was wondering in the snow she lived with a golf horned bull. He presented her with gifts every day. Often it was gold from his horns. He loved her fur and asked for tuffs of it to sleep with. They said they were in love. However one day she felt empty, like she no longer wanted to be apart of life and came to the bull for comfort. He pushed her away and abandoned her.
" That's how I found your cave." She said. " Ive been wondering the snow since then."
Her story brought tears the wolfs eyes. So that night as the rabbit slept he carved her two gifts. One of himself and the other of star. " One is to remind you of me." He told her. " So if your ever lost I'm still with you. The star is to remind you of how bright you shine."
He slept when he finished and when he woke up the rabbit was sitting at the edge of his cave. Her ears were perked like she could hear a voice calling out.
" He needs me." She said. " I need to go back."
" But he abandoned you." The wolf attempted to reason. " What will stop him from doing it again?"
" Nothing." She said. " But I love him."
Even if she didn't know it, those words struck the wolf down to the ground. His heart broke and it took all his strength to resist the urge to beg.
" Besides." She said as she turned towards him. " If he does I have you come back to."
The pain in his chest grew. He had no right to deny her what she wanted. She had made up her mind and no amount of talking could swat her. So the wolf did what hurt him more than anything ever could. He placed her gifts in front of her and said. " Yes you do."
And so he waited long after her fur blended into the drifts. His tears pooled in front of him and the broken shards of his hear crumbled to his paws. He sat at the mouth of his cave, waiting for her to return. He knew she very well may never come back however it was the hope that she would that drove him to wait. Wether she ever did or not is lost to history.
