My friend and I wrote this for calss and our friends really liked it so I'm posting it. Oh and just ignore the numbers because that's what we had to do for calss.

When the Past Comes Back

(1)(7)"Natalie, hurry up," I yelled from three aisles away.

"Ok! Jeez!" was what I got back. We were buying costumes for the Halloween party a few days away. Nat, (1)Ari, and I had gone trick-or-treating together since second grade. This year, our first year at UT, was different. We couldn't really go trick-or-treating this year, because one, there wasn't anywhere to go, and two, we were just too old! Now, five years later, as I look back on that, I wish we had gone, because then, none of this would have happened.

(6)It was October 24th, a week before Halloween. (8)The wind blew shakily through the trees, rustling the orange and yellow leaves, causing some to flutter to the ground. As I watched from out the window, I imagined the leaves as dancers in a ballet, floating gracefully across a stage.

"You remember...when we were kids...how we used to jump into the big pile of leaves your dad raked together? That was a lot of fun..."

"Yeah," Ari mumbled, completely unsure of what I had said. As usual, she was deeply immersed in her phone, her fingers flying over the buttons.

"Hey, ARI! You're an idiot," I said.

"Yep," was the only answer I received. I could have told her anything, like, "Hey Ari, guess what? My mom just died!" And she would say something like "Hmm...That's nice." Oh well. I loved her anyway.

I had known her since first grade, and from the minute we met, we were stuck like glue. We did everything together. We shared everything: food, clothes, toys, even our birthdays! We have had our party together for years.

"Aaaaaari! Talk to me!"

"Mmm. Sorry 'bout that."

Ugh. Whatever. I pushed my too-long brown hair out of my eyes. (10)VroooooOOOOOM! I looked back out the window as a black truck rumbled down the empty street.

"Uh, ok I'm done," said Ari.

"Well THAT took long enough," exclaimed Nat, who had been silently reading for several hours now.

"You're one to talk," I remarked, trying to sound annoyed. (4)"You guys have made me sit here forever! I'm so BORED!"

"Sorry! But this book is just so good!"

"You are such a nerd," said Ari, sliding her sleek (5)red Gizmo into her pocket. I had always been jealous of that phone, really of everything about Ari. She had always had the coolest toys as a kid, the prettiest clothes, AND she was drop-dead gorgeous. Shiny auburn hair, light, sparkly blue eyes, and the palest skin I had ever seen. She was one of the most popular girls in our dorm. And then there was Nat. Nat had blonde hair, glasses, brown eyes, and a ton of freckles. I have always thought she was as cute as a bug, but she is so self conscious. She's always been shy, and isn't really comfortable around people she doesn't know well. I love being around new people. Making new friends is so much fun! I'm still not nearly as popular as Ari.....

I looked back out the window as I saw the same black truck speed up the street. I frowned slightly, wondering why it looked so familiar to me.

"Annie! COME ON! We're gonna be late for gym," squawked Nat, tearing down the middle school hallway, her glasses falling off her nose.

"What time is it??"

"About thirty seconds until the bell rings! Come ON!" Nat was pulling on my sleeve, trying to hurry me up.
