Three guards rushed behind us, grabbing Sam's arms tightly as he struggled to break free, pressing a gun to his temple. Two more came forwards, coming towards me.
"Don't hurt her! Don't you dare hurt her!" Sam yelled, thrashing with all his might, the guard pressed his head down.
"How sweet. It's such a shame," Aris taunted, "You two would have been such a cute couple." Aris nodded towards one of the guards.
A gunshot echoed through the air, ringing in my ears. I whipped my head to see Sam. His forest green eyes wide with shock. I wanted to rush to his side but my muscles were petrified. Time slowed down as I watched him take heavy breaths. Sam glanced down at the crimson blood seeping through the uniform from his stomach.
I shrieked as his eyes slowly shut and he dropped to his side.
"Sam, no!" My desperate cry echoed through the hall as I kicked and thrashed with all my might, but to no avail. I watched with weak legs and tears flooding my eyes as Sam's lifeless body was dragged around the corner. My lip quivered as I stammered.
I remembered what Lieutenant Maxwell had told us, "Press this button on the side of the port screens and yell STOP. It will take you back to your time if there is an emergency." I glanced down at the outline of the portscreen in my pocket.
"Use it no matter what," Sam's voice echoed in my mind as he disappeared from my view.
"I'm so sorry, Sam," I whispered as Sam disappeared from my view.
A sudden feeling of hopelessness filled my chest. Using all of my strength and courage, I thrust the guards off me with all my might, swiftly pressed the small button through the pocket, and yelled, STOP.
I watched as the guards struggled to grip onto me but I was already gone. In an instant, I watched as the dark, gloomy hallway was replaced by the familiar purple light. My head pounded and my legs felt as if they were going to collapse, but the portal kept me upright, not allowing me to sink into the ground and hide from the pain.
Aris. My friend, the betrayer.
Sam. He was my hero, he protected me. Now he was dead.
Tears streamed down my face. My heart felt as if it was being ripped from my chest and I squeezed my eyes shut from the pain.
A sudden feeling of falling overcame me but I was too weak to even open my eyes.
"Miss Watson, why are you sleeping in my class?!" Ms.Gulon screamed, her yellow teeth bared. My head shot up, my heart racing and my breath heavy. I frantically looked around to find myself sitting at my desk in Ms.Gulon's room.
Quickly wiping tears from my face, I searched the room through fuzzy vision, but Aris was nowhere to be seen. My face reddened as I realized everybody was staring at me with wide eyes of anticipation of what punishment Ms.Gulon would inflict on me.
Had I been sleeping this whole time? This whole thing a nightmare. Did I make up Corrin, Cal, and Lyra? Lieutenant Maxwell and Aris? Sam?
Ms.Gulon tapped her huge, hairy feet impatiently. I stammered but couldn't come up with a good answer.
"Report to the principal's office at once!" She screeched. I hurriedly shoved my stuff into my binder and scurried out the door. I shook my head in confusion. I had been dreaming, I must have been.
Once I was out of Ms.Gulons sight, I reached into my pocket. I froze when I felt the cool, smooth locket between my fingers.
