Frisk skipped along the sidewalk, excited for their first day of school. Frisk lived fairly close to the school, so they weren't very surprised when it came into view only a few minutes after leaving home. Toriel, a monster reminiscent of a goat, had left Frisk's house earlier saying she had to set up the classroom. Frisk lived with Toriel, as Frisk didn't have anywhere else to go. Toriel was married to a monster called Asgore. They both looked after Frisk and together with Frisk they were a good family. When Frisk entered their classroom, souls of all colors and sizes nearly blinded them. This is because the school was a school that taught children how to harness the power of their souls, and use the magic contained within their souls. The school was taught by Toriel, with tips and scientific information from the ex-royal scientist, Alphys. She looked similar to a lizard or a dinosaur and she had been the royal scientist when they had resided in the underground, but when they left there were more scientists and Asgore wasn't really royalty anymore, so there was no need for a royal scientist. "Okay class," chimed Toriel's sweet voice, "It's time to start our lesson on fire magic; the easiest and most useful kind of magic."

After a few children (including Frisk) had finally learned to control their power over fire (and the rest had extinguished their flaming desks), the bell sounded for recess. The children poured out of the classroom, all racing each other towards the specially made playground. It had special areas that used soul power to enter and a tower, atop which rested a telescope that could be used to examine the playground below and the city above. It was like a paradise for the children, both entertaining them and allowing their souls to grow and develop. 20 minutes later, the bell sounded again and the children returned to the schoolhouse.

At the end of the school day, Toriel called Sans, who teleported all of the kids to their homes. All of them, except for Frisk. When the children (and Alphys) had been returned to their rightful households, Sans bid them farewell and teleported to his home. Frisk and Toriel walked home by themselves. They talked about a lot of things, like what had been taught in class and what would be made for dinner, and what they would do tomorrow, for it was a public holiday. After another minute or so, Toriel and Frisk arrived at their home, which was next to Sans and Papyrus's.
