I woke up screaming. My clothes were drenched in sweat. As my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I saw my mom running in. She sat on my bed and hugged me close. Even in the dark, I could see the exhaustion on her face. Nothing's been the same since Ann's death. This is routine for us now. Every day I wake up screaming to the same dream.

I'm standing alone in a dark forest.

"Burn me."

As I stand there, rotting people begin to crawl out of the Earth. They outnumber me. There's no escape.

"Burn ME."

But then one of them comes forward and points at me. "Why?" she asks. Behind her, lying motionless is Ann's cold body. And then slowly all the corpses move toward me.

"BURN ME."

Before I know it, I'm walking with them and when I look down at my own hands I see that the flesh is peeling off and rotting too.

I usually wake up screaming at this point in the dream. I sat there, wrapped in my mom's arms, too afraid to go back to sleep. I don't remember how long we sat like that but the next thing I knew my alarm clock was blaring at me. I groaned as I dragged myself out of bed. As I walked to the bathroom I stopped at the mirror. I cringed at the cavewoman staring back at me. My auburn hair was sticking out everywhere and there was a little bit of drool at the corners of my mouth not to mention the dark circles around my eyes.

I groaned again. I didn't want to start my senior year looking like something the cat spat out so I dragged myself into the shower and squeezed myself into a pair of jeans. I even tried taming my uncooperative hair and added a touch of makeup to hide the dark circles. I stared at the finished product in the mirror. "Today will be different. Chin up, Seira"

My mom was waiting for me at the counter. She looked at me concerned. "Honey are you okay?"

I gave her a shaky smile. "Senior year mom!"

She smiled back and nodded quietly.

I grabbed an apple and yelled a quick "Love you" before leaving. As soon as I got to school I found Ruth in our usual spot under the oak tree. I sat down, cross-legged in front of her. "Hey!" I said smiling.

"Can you believe it? Senior year!" Ruth said awestruck.

"I know! Few more months and we'll be out of this hell hole!"

"I guess, but we still have a long way to go. Senior year just began."

"Anyone ever tell you that you're a glass half empty person?"

Ruth stuck her tongue out. "I'm a realist. We call it as it is."

As we were bantering in the grass, my eyes were drawn to a mop of messy brown hair near the fountain. He was really tall and built. Definitely a new student, I thought to myself. As he turned around I caught a glimpse of his blue eyes. Even from a distance, they were striking. And suddenly those eyes were on me. My heartbeat quickened and I quickly looked away. I was just caught staring at him. I felt my cheeks turn red with embarrassment.
