Ms. Miles was always extremely nice. I had called earlier to talk with her. Mitch begged me to come along. So here we sit in her living room. Mrs. Miles was in the kitchen, she was cooking some brownies. She wanted to wait until Matt got home.
With Mitch being here I was nervous about Matt coming home. I was lucky that Jesse wasn’t sitting in here at the moment.
Soon the door opened and slammed. I knew exactly who was walking down the hall.
“Mom I'm home, now exactly why did you want me here...”
Matt broke off as he turned around and saw Mitch and me sitting on the couch. Matt's eyes widen as he saw Mitch. I honestly think he knew that Mitch might have to be restrained or he might kill him.
“Matt, honey, have a seat. I'll be there in a second," called Ms. Miles.
Matt cringed. He slowly hesitantly took the recliner across from us. The silence in the room became awkward.
Then Ms. Miles came into the room. She had a plate of freshly cooked brownies in her hand.
“Anyone care for brownies?”
Mitch was eying Matt, but broke at the mention of brownies.
“No thanks, but I do believe Mitch would like one.”
Ms. Miles sat the plate on the end table. Mitch instantly grabbed a chocolate fudge brownie and bit the corner.
Ms. Miles turned toward Matt.
“Robin called and said she wanted to talk.”
Matt looked nervous. Well he should because his mom deserves to know why I won’t be around anymore. Ms. Miles turned back in my direction. That was my cue to begin the horrific story.
“Well Ms. Miles,” I began. Ms. Miles listened as I told her about Matt and me.
I explained about the night I walked home. Explaining the results of that night was tough. Ms. Miles was extremely upset about the barely visible bruises on my wrists.
“Robin I am so very sorry. See Matt's father was very abusive. That is the reason we are no longer together,” Ms. Miles suddenly turned toward Matt, “I can't believe you did this. You saw what your father did to me and you hated it. I never would have believed you would become your father at such a young age.”
Ms. Miles began crying. Matt got off the recliner and sat down in the floor in front of this mother.
“Mom, I am so sorry. I felt awful afterward. I couldn't control how upset I got. Please, mom forgive me and stop crying please.”
Then Mitch spoke.
“Ms. Miles, I am afraid Robin has something else to tell you.”
Matt put his face in his hands. Ms. Miles slowly stopped crying.
“Well Ms. Miles I believe you should know Matt and I are no longer together.”
“Well Robin,” Ms. Miles began, “I think that you should give him another chance.”
I felt Mitch stiffen beside me. I knew he was short tempered and would soon burst.
“Actually Ms. Miles we are no longer together because I caught him cheating.”
Realization came across her face.
“So I won't be seeing you as often.”
“Afraid not Ms. Miles.”
Suddenly I felt the couch vibrate. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Mitch open his phone. Apparently he received a text message, which caused a smile to spread across his face.
