Silence ensued in the minutes that followed. All I could hear was the thumping of my own heart, the sound of my own breath amplified in my ears, and the distant noise of people speaking. I scurried after Malfoy cursing under my breath, as he slipped in between two precariously stacked bookshelves. I forced myself between them and emerged on the other side, breathless.
"...he's definitely here, couldn't help himself when he heard that his friends were here. Just like his father, always wants to be the hero..'' Snapes words drawled from the other side of the bookcase. I turned and halted reluctantly, listening to his words.
"Well his father died trying to be the hero, here's hoping he goes the same way" Yaxley chortles. I clenched my wand in my fist and strained my ears.
"We don't want him dead, remember what the Dark Lord said..."
"What that Potter and the Muggles are just a test run?" Yaxley chuckled making my heart thud erratically in my chest. Test run?
"You sound dubious Yaxley...surely you aren't doubtful of the Dark Lord's power?" Snape's asked
"Not dubious, no, just wary of Potter and his little merry band wagon. He does peculiar things to you, even the muggles seemed powerful. Besides, if Potter gets whiff of the other mazes then what?" Yaxley asked
"He's just a boy, why there is so many prophecies on the idiot I'll never know" Snape hissed in disdain
"It's not him. I heard rumours of Dumbledore and the old gang getting back together. Head quarters and all" Yaxley said making my heart stop. How did he know?
"Their rumours, just that. I have a mole on the inside and they've heard of no such thing" Snape broke off, just as I leaned forward. A hand clamped on my shoulder making me swivel with my heart in my mouth and my wand poking into flesh. Malfoy glared back at me.
"Are you trying to get us killed Potter? This way!' He darted away again disappearing further into the room.
I followed him at a careful run, with one backward glance and spotted what he'd seen. Malfoy was standing in front of what seemed to be a large portrait of an young girl draped in a black cloak. She had her face covered only exposing her fathomless grey eyes, in her hand she held a silver apple.
"danatia memoria" he muttered, glancing over his shoulder. I felt my stomach contort as Snape's voice drew nearer. The girl in the portrait simpered at his words and took a bite of the silver apple, disappearing out of the portrait. Malfoy reached for the silver knob before I clamped a hand around his wrist.
"What if they've charmed it?" I asked feverishly
"They don't know about this one. It was supposed to be destroyed in our second year after the Chamber of Secrets was opened, except they never got around to doing it" he whispered in hurry
"Where does it lead to?" I snapped hearing the sound of footsteps somewhere
"The dungeons" he hissed drawing his hand away. He grabbed a fistful of my shirt and dragged me through, closing the door behind him.
For a second we stood in the darkness, the sound of footsteps seeping from the other side of the door. They halted just outside the portrait, and I leaned closer to hear Snape's words.
..."it doesn't work anymore, Dumbledore charmed it when that idiot Weasley girl got in possession of that diary a few years ago" I seethed at his words, the thought of Ginny made my heart ache.
"Why'd they charm the damn portrait?" Yaxley asked his voice growing louder
"Dumbledore put the diary in here in Potter's first year, quite coincidental that in the next year one of his students finds it and becomes possessed. He didn't believe me when I told him Potter brought the diary to her..." I turned away looking at Malfoy
"He's lying. It was my dad, he put it in her cauldron" he said. I wanted to tell him I already knew that, but realised that he'd been trying to say something good. My heart twinged at that thought, making me nod instead.
"Lumos" I said, and walked past him. We were in the dungeons, the distinctive smell of potions, especially that of pollyjuice, seemed suffused in the air.
"We need to find out if Fred and George got to their parents" I said looking back at him "Hermione's not here and your obviously better at doing spells...can you do that Patronus thing that Cedric knows how to do?"
He raised his wand, murmuring under his breath, until an orb of whit light shot out of it, hanging in the air.
"You have to send your message, into the wand" he said handing over his wand. For a second we both starred at each other, and I realised how vulnerable and exposed that had made him, how easy it'd be to...
"Potter?" He prompted. I snapped out of my reverie and looked down at the wand, rubbing my scar.
"Fred, George, its Harry. We got out ok, but Snape and Yaxley are going to be looking around now that they know we're here. If you got out meet us at..."
"The Shrieking Shack" Malfoy added
"...the Shrieking Shack, don't hang around" I said handing him back his wand.
"What if they haven't got out?" Malfoy said
"They have" I said unconvincingly. He looked away before swishing his wand, so that the orb of light danced into the air and popped out of existence.
"Shrieking Shack it is" I murmured, Snape's words still churning inside my head.
