It Begins: An Explanation

"For sale: baby shoes, never worn," a six-word poem credited to Ernest Hemingway. As beginnings go, that is intriguing, perplexing, and more than a little telling as to the author. The author of this piece would be worried about revealing so much of their soul to the readers, but in saying so I fear it may already be too late. Did you catch that, dear reader? I and not they. So who am I? The author? The speaker? (too often we forget that these are not one and the same) I am neither. I, of course, is a letter. Who does this letter represent in this story (for we mustn't confuse one usage of the letter with them all), though? But I digress (that particular riddle is one I will leave for you to unravel at your leisure), and we must continue. The show must go on, as they say. So here, dear reader, are the six words that, bequeathed to you, are a beginning:
"The world cracked at that kiss"
