“Ow!” I tried to stifle my creams. It worked. All that came out was a groan but the pain was still there.  It was hot….. Really hot. I felt like there was a fire lit on my arm. I felt like itching it but I was too afraid to touch it. So it went on. Moments of rolling on the grass but faster. I didn’t know what caused.

Then I remembered my father’s words. “It burns. It’s meant to hurt vampire but it hurts us too...” Vervaine. Why didn’t I think of it? I dashed to the other end of the park, still writhing.

This was the one reason why I needed my father…to protect me. Only problem was they killed him. They killed my whole family and I was the only one left. I knew nothing except the little my father taught me. The first rule was never to trust anyone. I didn’t even have anyone so who would I consider trusting. I was miles away from home. I lived in Memphis but my life was all gone now. I had to be away from my father’s killers for now.

I knew they’d find me somehow but I wasn’t afraid of them. They should be the ones afraid of me. They killed my family. They wanted to kill me too. They had weapons. I had none. But my father always told me “You’re stronger than any other creature, Marin. You are a hybrid.”
