Louis hesitantly twisted his hands out of his pockets to press the frozen glass door open. The warm air exhaled against his blushed cheeks as he stepped to the side for a building crowd to pass through the opening. He made his way to the back of the book store just to make sure the only person in his existence he ever cared for was safe.
Violet had told him she was blind a few days earlier. He worried about her.
Today, he was going to invite her to go somewhere. Louis wanted to make her feel special, and not the terrible kind of "different" in which he felt. He wanted to see her smile again. He wanted to hold her hand. He wanted to listen to her voice. He wanted her, and all of her. He thought he was in love.
There she was, in the corner of the small book store. The atmosphere was muted, and she looked lonely.
Louis leaned against the wall, crossed his ankles, and cleared his throat.
She curved her lips in a smile while moving her hand up to touch his.
Louis felt the spirit of homeliness encircle him whenever Violet was there. He was the dull, broken logs, and she was the flame that gave them purpose.
“Are you doing anything today?” He hid his face in shyness, even though she could not see.
Violet slowly shook her head.
Louis felt the burden of worry disintegrate from his shoulders. “Perfect. I want to take you somewhere. It's a surprise.”
Something in Violet held a deep trust with Louis, and she agreed.
He held her hand and grabbed her cardigan as she stood up. She felt around the table to find her pen and notebook.
“What is that?” Louis asked in a interested tone.
“A book,” she stated with a breathy laugh.
“Well, what's in that book?”
“Paper,” is all Violet could think of as a clever answer. She liked this game.
“What's on the paper?”
“Writing.”
Louis was getting frustrated. Not the angry kind, but the sarcastic, giddy kind. “And what type of writing might that be, Violet?”
She took a brief pause to gather her thoughts. “I like to keep count of things. Good, positive things.”
Louis opened the door for Violet as he began to wonder what that could mean. He decided not to question more, being proud of the brief answer he finally received, but it stuck with him.
The drive was lined with light conversation between the two with soft music performing in the background. You could tell Violet was happy. Everything that came along with her appearance was bright, even her eyes. Louis loved that. He knew that he couldn't be happy, it just wouldn't happen. So, he wanted to have someone that was. Violet was his happiness.
The keys were pulled, and the gears shifted. Louis parked a little crooked, scratch that, a lot crooked, but he chose not to be concerned. Violet's eyes darted in stiff movements and her hands went out in a hopeful investigation to connect with Louis'. The sight made Louis' heart ache. She looked forgotten. He moved quickly around the car to be by her side. His arms draped around her petite body to guide her to the destination.
Dried grass crunched beneath their feet as the dandelions tickled their ankles.
“Louis?”
“Yes, love?”
“Where are we?”
“One more minute.” He placed her hands around his neck and scooped his arms underneath her. As the swift motion played to hold Violet, a vocalization of anxious joy spilled through her teeth. Louis took too large of steps for his short legs in attempt to get over the high, but closed, rails. He set her down and kissed her cheek without thought.
“A railroad. We're at a railroad. It was like my safe haven as a kid. I came here when I needed to clear my head. I've never really brought anyone here.”
He gently guided her over to the tracks and laid her down. If only Violet could have seen the shining stars covering the night sky, and the beautiful grin painted on Louis' face. He couldn't remember the last time he felt this way.
Violet leaned her head into his chest. A single tear escaped from the corner of her eye as she produced a shaky breath. She curled in her soft lips and rubbed them together.
“Why me?”
“What, why did I bring you here?”
“No, why did you choose me?”
“Because you're my happiness.”
