Prologue

Opening the door silently, Ryan slowly stepped into the familiar room, breathing in the scent he knows too well. He traced his fingers on the dresser while looking at the framed photographs on it. Her beautiful smile was in each and every one of the photos, sending memories of her in his mind. There was one picture where her long spill of brunette hair flowed smoothly and she was laughing joyously, and for a moment, he could almost hear her laughter echoing through the room.

He looked around him and he could feel tears stinging in his eyes, threatening to flow down anytime soon. He imagined the time he had spent with her on that very spot, making fun of each other and laughing hard on the bare floor without a care in the world. How he wished he could live that moment once more, just to have a last sweet taste of her presence.

He pictured Rachel in her hospital gown in the hospital bed, lying motionless with tubes connecting her veins to the machine that was keeping her alive. She was still breathing, but her motionless body showed no life at all. The difference of her now and then was so drastic that it sent a fresh wave of tears welling up inside of Ryan and he let the tears flow down freely.

He walked over to the bedside table and found a green leather-bound book placed carelessly on it. He picked it up with a frown; he had never seen it before, not even in the many times he had been there. She must have hid it whenever he came around, he figured. Curious and intrigued, he picked it up gingerly, as if it could break at his mere touch. He opened it carefully and the first page read “Diary of Rachel Sam”.

Should I open this, he thought. It would cause no harm whatsoever anyway if he did. What could possibly be inside it? All her feelings perhaps, the true ones, and all the emotions she has been covering with that breathtakingly beautiful smile of hers. It was clearly a private diary since she did not even tell Ryan about it. But what if he did open it? He might just regret reading it and finding out whatever lies in the words of that diary. Some things are better left unknown, a phrase Ryan heard from Rachel herself.

After more internal debates, Ryan finally decided to open and read it, even if it meant invading Rachel’s privacy. He just simply wanted to know and not be kept in the dark in this depressing time. Taking a deep breath, he flipped to the next page, where the words she had written would reveal all.
