I heard once not to count your eggs before they hatch but me being young and a dreamer I ignored most words of wisdom.

It was September 12th my first day in elementary school. And little did I know I would be meeting a boy soon to be my best friend. He had the desk in front of me. He put his backpack on the floor under his desk then looked back at me sitting at my desk.

"Hey." He said first

"Hey." I replied

"What's your name?" He asked

"Crystal, and yours?"

"Justin."

"Nice!" I told him.

He laughed "Thanks, I like yours too."

When class was over we said goodbye and he said, "See ya tomorrow!"

"Ok, see ya tomorrow!"

As soon as I got home I ran upstairs, plopped on my bed and screamed into my pillow. "HE'S SO CU—TE!" clearly I couldn't wait to go to school tomorrow.

My mom who was on the balcony just outside her bedroom on the second floor came running up to my room on the third floor. Are you ok Rosa?!" she asked worriedly. She often called me by my middle name.

Sorry, Mami-" I sat up and faced her. "Yes, I'm fine. I just met this cute boy at school today!"

"Ah so that's what the screaming was about." she chuckled. "I'd like to hear all about him while you help me cook dinner."

"Ok mami." I said with a huge smile on my face.

we walked downstairs to the kitchen, I opened up the fridge and got out the ingredients for the lasagna, As mami got out the pots and pans and put them on the stove.

"So what's his name?"

"His name is Justin,"

"Describe him to me"

"He has black wavy hair, bright blue eyes, light skin, and a nice smile."

"Ooh, he does sound cute!"

"Mom! Stop it!"

We both laughed.

"What should I do?"

"Well get to know him first, then maybe in the future you guys can go out."

"Oh I hope so mami, he seems like a really nice person."

"How's my lovely ladies this evening?"

"I'm great papa!" I answered him.

"Dinner is ready so wash up quickly so we can eat love," Mami said to papa.

"Yes yes, I'll be down as quick as possible."

Mother and I finished setting the table with the silverware and food just as papa came down the steps from washing up.

We all sat down and then papa prayed for the food.

"Dear heavenly father, thank you for the day you have given to us, bless the food you have provided, and that we will have more days like this, in JESUS name I pray amen."

As we began to eat papa asked me about my day at school.

"So crystal, how was your day at school?" Papa asked.

"It was great I met a lot of new kids and my teacher was really nice."

Mom grunts and looks at Crystal and signals her to tell her father about the boy from her school.

"And also there was this really nice boy I met."

"Oh?" papa says interested.

"His name is Justin, and I think he's cute."

Papa looks at mami with a disapproving expression.

Mami shrugs her shoulders.

Papa looks back at Crystal and asks her "what do you mean you think he's cute?"

Crystal replies and says " I think I'm old enough to have my opinion on things."

Papa raises his voice at Crystal.

" I don't want to hear anymore of this Justin talk, Understand me?"

"But papa! Why can't you let me be a big girl?"

" Just because you are older doesn't mean that you can do whatever you want to do."

"It's not fair I deserve to be able to have feelings for someone without you being in it."

" I have had enough of your back talk young lady, I think a week of grounding should be good."

" I haven't done anything to earn grounding, really now you are treating me like a little kid, I'm not your little girl, I don't need you in my life for every single thing I do. I want to be able to do things on my own."

" This is my house, and you will go by my rules. I don't want you to be speaking to this Justin kid anymore. Do you understand."

" Yeah, I understand that I will never be able to have a life because you will always be in it." Crystal stomps up the stairs and slams her door shut.
