" Ash!! Jess is on the phone for you!!" Someone called out to me. I sighed wearily and tried to open my eyes. I had suddenly become ill since I got told that fortune. I had become very stiff, so stiff that I could barely move (well, as much as you can move in a wheelchair). I was experiencing very blurry vision and had been getting frequent headaches. I didn't want to worry mum though.
She already has enough to worry about without adding me to the mix. What with Dad leaving us last year, and the rent getting higher and higher, she had to work her ass off to provide for me, especially because I was in a wheelchair. Well, I did have a part time job, but mum worked the most. The amount of medical bills and doctor appointments was ridiculous. Not t mention the equipment I needed to live. Anyway, I wheeled my way sleepily to where mum was, my eyes half open.
I grabbed the phone from her and said weakly, " Hi Jess."
" Guess what I found out?" she said excitedly.
" What is it?' I asked tiredly. I could feel another headache coming on so leaned on the kitchen bench for support. It was a nice little kitchen with a little redwood table, two seats surrounding the table, oak panelled floors, a marble kitchen bench, redwood cupboards, a little stove, a microwave, an oven, and all the usual kitchen stuff. My dad had built this kitchen for Mum for their 5 year anniversary, two years ago.
Dad had left us a year and a half ago, around about the same time that I had my accident. Also, at that time, Mum was pregnant with my sibling. I was so excited because I hadn't had a sibling for 14 and a half years. But as soon as Dad left, Mum started heavily drinking and smoked a pack of cigarettes
" A singing competition!!" Jess squealed excitedly, making my ears ring.
" What?!" I said, my eyes wide open and my heart beating fast. I had loved singing, ever since I was a little girl. I used to spend hours and hours with Jess in my bedroom, singing our hearts out. I guess singing was one of the only things I was good at. In fact, it was one of the few thing I could do, ever since my accident.....
" You heard me. A singing competition!! Tomorrow at the local theatre. Whoever wins will..." she paused for dramatic effect. I sighed impatiently. Jess was such a drama queen
" What?!" I said, forgetting about my headache and paying full attention to Jess. I had never been this excited since the doctors told me that I wouldn't need a wheelchair anymore. Then I found out that they were lying, so yeah. Not a good day for me...
"You win a record deal!! So, what do you say? You, me and some friendly competition?" Jess asked me, her voice pleading.
" I dunno," I said doubtfully
" Aw come on!! We haven't had any fun since you got stuck in that wheelchair a year and a half ago!!" Jess whined. I sighed and rubbed my temples. She was right. I hadn't had any fun since the accident which put me in this wheelchair.
" Fine," I said wearily. But in the inside, I was excited. And happy. I hadn't felt these emotions in a long time.
" Ok, I will come to your house and together we can go. Bye," Jess said excitedly and I heard a CLICK. I sighed happily as I put the phone down. I had completely forgotten that I was sick. Somehow, I had a good feeling about tomorrow as I wheeled myself back to my bedroom, humming to myself. Little did I know that my whole life was going to change
