Most of the men were out searching the streets looking for the injured or dead, except for Kenith , a large man by name of Marcus and the boy who now took his father’s place at the table. The oldest sons of both men, stood behind their elders, in the circle room while behind the boy was empty. Silently Vincent and Eric and the eldest sons watched the debate of the village’s safety unfurl.
“What made them attack early?” Mused Kenith
“Maybe they knew we would not be as watchful, last night as we are most.” Answered Marcus
“You give these demons two much credit, Marcus, they are but beasts.”
“Of Destra’s creation”
“True, but they still remain beasts”
“Kenith, you do not give the Haunt, the caution they have proven time and again, they deserve” spoke Vincent “last night one had the power to keep me from its thoughts. Do you not agree that this proves they are not mere beasts?”
For a while the three heads of the founding families just looked at Vincent.
“What do you suggest we do then sorcerer?” asked Marcus.
“That is your decision to make” said Vincent returning to his silence.
The sun reached its peck as Kenith and Marcus argued over the best action to take in order to defend it.
“I still think, they will attack a day from now, and that we should prepare as we always have” Kenith cut across Marcus.
“But why would they attack out of their usual pattern” the boy thought aloud. It was the first time he had spoken since they had entered the small council room.
“What are your thoughts then, Caleb?” asked Marcus, curios to see what Jacob’s son thought.
“Well, every second year we see an influx in their numbers, and this is the second year from the last. Spring was early to. Maybe they are short of food, due to a growing number of members in the pack”
“That’s it” boomed Vincent standing to his feet making all in the room jump and in Eric’s case fall off his stool.
“What’s it, Vincent?” asked Kenith
“Caleb I think you are on the right lines, with what you said but I have a different theory” Vincent rambled, moving his hands absurdly as he continued “All wolf packs have an alpha, now the Haunt, being cousins to wolfs are similar. The pack has an alpha and so on. I think that one of the other wolfs got feed up being of lower rank, left and formed his own pack.”
“That would mean we would have twice the amount of attacks as normal” said Marcus
“It would explain the early attack?”Kenith included
“Did the Haunt pack take anyone last night?” questioned Eric remembering something he read the night before.
“No, everyone was counted for. Why do you ask?”
“If there is a new pack they will have to eat human flesh every month, to maintain the poison on their fangs and claws.”
“Yes, you’re right” Vincent exclaimed “why didn’t I think of that before.”
“Does this mean they will attack tonight again?” asked Caleb.
“Maybe.” Vincent replied
“I’ll warn the villagers.” Said Marcus, within second he and his son were gone.
“Kenith get your magician ready, I will need to know what they can do to work out the most effective defensive spells we can conjure up.”
