I have no idea how long I’d been sat at the bar or how many drinks I’d downed I just know that it was a lot or, something like that.
I looked down at my empty glass with a frown. “Ty hit me again would ya”?
“Sure thing Coop”. I noticed this time how he didn’t try to slide it down the bar for me to catch but actually put the glass in my hand and feeling that full of alcohol I knew why.
“Bartender, can I get a large rum please”? A gruff and depressed voice called out from next to me. I swung my head groggily around to my left where the voice came from. Still completely aware of the large amount of alcohol in my system I still couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d seen that guy somewhere before.
“Excuse me, do I know you”? I asked, the alcohol making me braver than my sober self to talk to this guy, I know he’s older than me but he’s built like brick shit house, tanned skin and is probably a whole head taller than me. The guy turned to me looking completely depressed, his dark eyes just as heavy as mine felt; he shrugged at me and left it like that or so I thought, out of nowhere he just started rambling about some woman.
“I don’t know what to do anymore, woman’s got me backed into a corner” he grumbled, gripping the hair on his head in frustration.
I nodded at him strongly. “I feel your pain man, trust me”.
He turned to me sceptically. “Oh really? You got kids son”?
“No sir”.
He laughed dryly. “Well let me educate you - boys are fine; you know where you stand with the boy, easy as pie but a girl”? He shook his head, staring blankly at the bar top. “Girls are like another species entirely, they cause a lot more damage - you think you know them – hell you have known them since they were in diapers - you should know them better than they know themselves and just when you think you’ve got them pinned they do something that reminds you just how clueless you really are”.
“Well I can’t say for sure about daughters but women in general I agree with you, they get inside your head, you try to help them and you’re doing it wrong” I sighed while dragging a heavy hand down my face.
“You got that right, this a girlfriend you’re talking about”? I laughed humourlessly and just from that the guy knew me, had me pinned in a heartbeat.
“A potential huh”?
I nodded. “Yeah I guess, circumstances aren’t ideal –“
“Screw circumstance kid, if she’s the one she’s the one, trust me”.
“It doesn’t matter, she’s not exactly my biggest fan right now – I just wanted to help but she is not the damsel in distress type and takes serious offence at being thought of that way, so just trying to be the good guy and do the right thing I’ve instantly turned her against me”.
“Sounds like my little girl to a T, she’s always hated being taken care of, but mark my words - women like that more often than not want to be taken care of, they just don’t know how to ask – I was talking to you before about my little girl? Well, she’s completely independent, lives alone, hardly calls anymore, never asks to be held but would never push me away, ever” he laughed looking like he was flicking through memories that said as much. “I remember when she was eight, she was mad at me for something or other, she stayed out at her Grandparent’s house and that night I got an urgent call for a conference for work out of the city, I didn’t have time to call and she cried for days because she hadn’t been able to tell me goodbye, not that she let me see, and now I get thrown out of her hospital room.
