As a child, I always believed that my destiny would be the same as the several generations before me - to run the family farm. I never thought about all the other things I could do with my life, like living in the city working as a business man who wears a suit and tie or even having a pet other than a chicken or a barn spider. Everything beyond our farm and the small little country town seemed way to far out of my reach. I mean sure, I fantasied about living in the city with shops just down the road and driving around in in flash car, all of my other siblings did too but like I said, my destiny was to harvest corn fields and butcher sheep; and I knew without questioning that all my other brothers and sisters thought exactly the same thing.

I reluctantly opened my eyes and stared at the wooden roof above me while listening to the radio calmly wispering into my ear declaring it was time to get up. I rolled over to investigate whether Simon and George were awake. I knew Simon would be; being 4 years younger than me he always seemed to awaken first. George on the other hand yearned for a sleep-in, much like myself. We were twins and people often asked us if we could read each others minds and all that jazz. We couldn't really, I didn't believe that telepathic communication was possible; George and I just think alike.
Simon was sitting on his bed; it was already made and he was dressed.
"Morning" I said.
"Good morning Evan" George replied grinning.
"What are you smiling at?" I asked slightly confused.
"Nothing" Simon responded before skipping out of our bedroom door and down the hall - still grinning.
I shrugged it off, pushed my blankets back and sat up rubbing my eyes. I threw some clothes on, made my bed, and drew back the curtains, admiring the view of the farm. You could only just see the road at the end of the driveway on the left. On the right was our main barn, the one we had the tractors and hay in. Also the one where we kept our baby animals. Off into the distance were fields and fields and fields. Some with corn or wheat, some with animals and some just long grass with the odd silo or another shed.
I wandered down to the bathroom. I could hear voices and bowls clanking. 'Mum, Dad, Sadie and Ida must be up already' I thought.
I started to wash my face but paused when I heard someone behind me. I glared into the mirror, right at Simon. He burst out laughing and once again skipped off back down the hallway. I inspected myself in the mirror. Long streaks of coloured felt-pen traced around all over my face.
"Bloody hell Simon" I cursed under my breath before continuing to wash my face.
