Phil was slightly mystified when he received a text while in the middle of his biology homework. After all, his friends would have either used Skype or Discord, and his mother was within the same building as him.
Thus, he experienced an unrivalled feeling of elation when he saw that he text seemed to be from Emily, given that, while he didn't have the number, she had kindly let him know that it was her.
E: Hey Phil, it's Emily. I got your note. BTW I didn't know you listened to MCR.
P: Oh, hey Emily. Yeah, I've been listening to them for at least 2 years now, you?
E: LOL m8 idek how many, there are like so many bands, top 3 have to be like Green Day, MCR, and A7XS
P: Srysly? That's the exact favorite as me.
E: Haha are you serious?
P: Yeah, although I do listen to Iron Maiden often.
Phil's brain, finally recovering from the shock of his shot-in-the-dark plan coming to fruition, remembered that he had concert tickets for Green Day's Revolution Radio Tour, and it just happened that one of his friends had to bail for reasons that probably included procrastination. While he would look back on this choice as an impulsive decision, Phil decided to offer that ticket to Emily.
P: Hey, Emily, there's a Green Day concert at 6:00 PM Saturday at the 9:30 Club, would you like to come?
E: Um...lemme check w/ my folks
OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD HE ASKED ME TO A CONCERT!!!
Emily couldn't hold back the squeal. It reached frequencies the likes of which would make an opera singer jealous, causing quite a stir in her house and probably that of her neighbors as well. However, it was embarrassing when her mother rushed up the stairs equipped with a rolling pin and a knife, ready to strike down an intruder, only to realize that it was just her daughter being a ridiculous fangirl.
"Emily! What the hell is going on in here? I ran from an open flame to make sure you're ok, and here you are fangirling over some random thing on Tumblr!"
Emily went completely red in the face. Not only was she suffering from embarrassment over her mother witnessing her fangirling, but she also dreaded that her mom had discovered the dark place that is Tumblr.
"Um...Mom, would I, by any chance, be free to go to a concert with a friend at, say, 6:00 PM on Saturday?"
Emily's mom's face stretched into this knowing smile, the kind that signifies that someone can see right through you. Immediately, she asked Emily who the lucky guy was, which elicited a large blush from Emily.
"Um...well, h-his n-name's Phil, and he wants to take me to a Green Day concert."
Emily's mom pondered the question, as she didn't know anything about this "Phil" kid. She didn't want her daughter's first date ever to end up being with some no-good wretch of a boy who would dump her in a month's time. No, Emily's mom wanted only the best for her daughter. However, she remembered how much she liked Green Day when she was in college, and felt that any boy who liked them had to at least be on the right track.
"Alright Emily, you can go."
HOW CAN SHE SCREECH SO LOUDLY? Emily's mother had to cover her ears for the second time that day in order to shield herself from her daughter's squeals.
Emily, however, was ecstatic, immediately texting Phil that she could come, and probably hugging her mother more than she ever would need to in the entire course of her life. For the rest of the day, she couldn't make her face contort itself out of the lip-stretching smile it seemed to have frozen into.
Meanwhile, Phil was suffering from the same situation, unable to keep a smile off of his face for the rest of the day. However, unlike Emily, he did manage to avoid the usual ribbing he received from his mother and sister about any one of his crushes. Still though, like Emily, he was highly ecstatic.
Now, they just had to wait until Saturday.
