She watched her child, so small and fragile laying in the hand-crafted wooden basket, wrapped up in her soft, wool blanket. A tear escaped her sea blue eyes, but a small smile spread across her face. The baby returned the smile, reaching for her mother's dark hair.
Rain drops began pounding against the pavement. The mother sighed, wrapping the baby one more time before saying her goodbyes. She slipped the necklace from around her neck. Running her hand along the wooden pendant, she whispered.
"To thee I give the power of the Rands,
To shield, to protect, to save, to have,
For thee is one.
For thee is true.
By blood, by home, by spirit, by you."
The baby's eyes twinkled as she watched the beautiful creature in front of her. She saw as the necklace glowed in the woman's hand and she grabbed for it, wanting to feel its warmth. Her mother let her hold it with her and the baby giggled at the necklace and held it close to her heart.
One more, the mother thought. One more time. She picked up the baby, who still giggled in her arms. She cuddled against her mother's chest. "Oh, my Juliet. I don't want to leave." Another tear escaped the mother's eye. "You're special, my baby. Remember that. Don't ever take off this necklace." Juliet stared up at her mother, understanding flashing in her eyes. "I love you." In response, the baby held her arms out for a hug. Her mother pulled her to her neck, kissed her rosy cheeks, and patted her soft, black hair. "Be good," she murmured before placing the child back into her basket. She wrapped the blanket tightly around her and pulled the necklace on around the baby's neck. The necklace glowed one more time before settling back into its normal brown. The baby watched as she rung the doorbell. She heard the door open and she turned towards the light of the house, but when she looked back, her mother was gone.
