Valkyrie walked onto the battlefield, staring at the corpses scattered across the field. She somehow had a feeling that she, or Darquesse rather, wasn't responsible for these deaths. Her necromancer ring felt like it was on permafrost.
The hairs on the nape of her neck rose. Before she had time to react, a stream of shadows came crashing into her back. Thank God for Ghastly's jacket. It absorbed most of the impact. But that didn't stop her from slamming face first into the ground. Valkyrie felt a silver run down her spine. She knew whoever who had sent those shadows after her was behind her.
She rose slowly and turned around; coming face to face, with none other than Lord Vile himself.
"Vile," she whispered in horror. Vile said nothing. 'Of course not! He can't speak!' Valkyrie thought to herself. She knew it was him. It was him responsible for the lives taken from these sorcerers. She felt almost... Relieved that Vile was the cause of this rather than her. Darquesse.
Valkyrie didn't know what to say. She was obviously terrified, but at the same time intrigued by this figure in the shadows. She slowly gathered shadows in her palm, but Vile wasn't daft. He knew she would fight. Or die trying. He lashed out a tendril of shadows from his armor. They wrapped around Valkyrie's wrist, and she cried out and the shadows from her palm evanesced. Vile yanked her towards him and she flew like a rag doll.
He tightened the shadows wrapped around her wrist and Valkyrie gasped. He pulled her closer until they were chest to chest. Valkyrie's breath hitched. She stared at him for three whole seconds.
One thousand... Two thousand... Three thousand...
Surprisingly, all Vile did was tilt his head to the side... The way Skulduggery did. Valkyrie was surprised. "Aren't you going to kill me?" She whispered, not fighting against her bonds. She tried looking beyond the veil of shadows covering his face. Or if he even had a face. But all she could see were two black orbs. Supposedly his eyes. They bore into her own with a fierce intensity. All Valkyrie could do was stare, mesmerized by the creature in front of her.
A part of her told her to fight. To run from this mass-murderer. Who knows what he'd do to her. She imagined a wall of shadows crashing into him. Vile stumbling back as Valkyrie made her great escape. She imagined running. Running to safety.
But she did none of these things as she watched shadows curl from Vile's armor. They came over her face and she shut her eyes, bracing herself for excruciating pain. The shadows moved up and down her cheek. Almost... Tenderly. Was Lord Vile... Caressing her?
"What are you..." She was cut off by a beam of shadows pressing lightly against her lips. Valkyrie stood still, not daring to move. Or breathe.
Slowly, she noticed the mask retracting slowly from his. He brought his cold, dark shadows under her chin to tilt her upwards to face him. He then leaned forward until their lips touched. The barest brush of the lips. The lightest of feathery kisses. Valkyrie's eyes were wide with shock, but eventually she gave in to the sweet kiss. His lips and touch were cold. Though she developed goosebumps, Valkyrie enjoyed the sensation.
A moment too soon, Lord Vile pulled away. He tilted his head again and vanished through the shadows.
"Wait!" Valkyrie cried. But he was gone. Gone without an explanation. She was confused and lost. And alone...
"Vile..." She whispered to herself.
A few hours later, Skulduggery found her, with two fingers to her lips, and her eyes glued to the withered black patch of grass in front of her.

FanfictionA Skulduggery Pleasant fanfic. I'm obsessed with Vilkyrie (pairing of Lord Vile and Valkyrie Cain). So this is an impromptu piece. Please enjoy and hopefully criticism is recommended.
