James, Sirius, Peter and Remus were in a dilemma. The four fifteen years old boys had finally figured out a name for their "ragtag band of mischief makers", quote Minerva McGonnagall. They were the Marauders.
And the marauders needed a mascot.
James, being James, volunteered himself in deer form as mascot, but no one agreed.
Peter volunteered the house elf they'd found wandering the school.
Sirius volunteered his owl.
Remus volunteered that the argument was stupid
So as the disappointed boys walked back into the school for lunch, they were still without a mascot, that is, until Peter pointed out the cat sitting prominently on a pedestal by the front door. The boys agreed the cat was great. But when they tried to catch it, it seemed a lot smarter than most cats. They couldn't catch it, but they promised they'd look for it again.
For it's distinct silver markings in the shape of glasses.
