EVELYN
It was a cold evening and the lanes were slowly getting filled. The temperature dropped below zero and people rushed into stalls and malls to buy whatever they had intended to buy. The park was very quiet. Very few people sat on the benches, usually paired and engaged on a conversation with their other half. One teenage girl was sitting alone in the bench, talking to no one and staring at the dirt below. She had a gorgeous face and was wearing a leather over-coat. Her naturally red hair was thick and light freckles adorned her tanned face. She got up and the tears on her eyes reflected the moonlight. She walked past the mushy couples on the park and slowly wiped her tears without letting others know. Staying true to her existing ponder, she made her way to the lane. Before she could step out of the park, she heard someone shout at her.
"Evelyn!" She turned back to spot a young man running towards. The voice had distress in it and Evelyn seemed to have sensed it. "Where have you been, Evelyn? I've scoured the whole place and you are relaxing your butt out at the park?" he ended. She did not give any reaction but the tears on her cheeks now became obvious to make out from a close distance. "Whoa! You've been crying!" the man replied. She wiped her face as vigorously as possible and replied, "It's alright. What's the matter?" "No, you don't look too good now" debated the man. "It's alright, Alex. What's the matter now?" she shot back. Alex glanced at her for a few seconds before replying. "Well. There's something important you need to know" he said, rolling his eyes and letting an unnatural sigh. "What?" she asked. "You've been up against Austin again, right?" Alex asked her, hoping to get answers. All she did was, give him a curt nod. "Never mind that. What's that important thing anyway?" she distracted.
Alex gave a bewildered look. "I really don't know if I have to tell this to you now," he said. Evelyn gave him a stern look. "What, you come here searching for me everywhere and don't really tell me what the matter is?" she retorted. Alex's face looked puzzled. He pondered what to do for a split-second before making his decision. "I really don't know how I should tell this to you but I could show it to you if you follow me," he said and quickly pulled up onto a jog, having Evelyn on his tail. He moved past the third lane to the right and then crossed the road to get to the other side before making his way past the stalls and marts. He then reached a dark alley and the stench hit the duo instantly.
"What here?" Evelyn asked after covering her nose. Alex had two fingers on the nose too. He replied, "It's going to be huge so make your heart for it" he replied and shoved her in. She saw what lay before her and the world halted. Everything came to a stop. Her mind started spinning and the stench no longer mattered. Her eyes welled up and her mouth hung down. She could not believe what she saw. No way, she said to herself. Lightning struck inside her head and thunders boomed everywhere. Every flower on earth seemed to fade and every colour turned to grey. Evelyn could not take it in. Evelyn collapsed only to be caught by Alex. It took all her strength to stand up again. She stood, looking at what lay in front of her. She started screaming on looking at the lifeless body of Austin, again.
For her, the world was crumbling down to bits and pieces. Every angle seemed to emit a distant echoes, all at the same instant. She simply could not digest the reality of the situation. Every particle remained inanimate for what seemed like eternity. Evelyn regained consciousness after a few cries and shakes from Alex. "See, I told you I shouldn't have shown this to you" he remarked, with a sniff. Tears slowly welled upon Evelyn's cheeks. She wiped them with her moist hands and looked at Austin. She took his head into her palm. Alex flinched. "Eve. He's dead. You can't do anything about it. I've checked his pulse. What do we do?" He asked. She looked at his innocent demeanor. "We'll inform the police. This isn't right. This. Isn't right." She stammered. Alex helped her up and they walked out of the alley.
Seven minutes and a phone call later, the police arrived at the spot and the duo guided them to the scene of murder. A rather tall female officer jumped out of the Aston Martin cop model. She had a Stern face and her shades hid her mascara lined eyes. Her face was as smooth as her hands. She wore a ring which appears to have diamonds embedded on it, in her right middle finger. Her first impression gave Evelyn, mixed feelings. "Where?" Asked the policewoman. Evelyn could only point in the direction. She had still not gotten over the whole drama. Ten more minutes later, the cops hurried outside the alley, with hands obviously hiding their nostrils. "It's a murder" cried the woman in a voice as deep as it could be. Evelyn chugged her tears. It was all to much for her to take it in. "What should we do now, ma'am?" Asked Alex. She grimaced at him and replied "Go to school, kids. Leave this to the adults." Evelyn got super pissed at this comment. She screamed at the officer "He was my boyfriend for God's sake!" The police offer looked at Evelyn without letting go, her frown. "That," she started, "should be something to worry about. But kid, he's gone. And you can't do anything now. Go home" She gave a Curt nod at the duo and entered the Martin with the best of a woman's swagger.
Evelyn watched as the sun rose from the horizon. She realized how quickly life takes a turn. Not in a year, not in a month, not over a week. For Evelyn, life had changed from Dusk to Dawn. It was yesterday evening, she had cuddled with Austin, looking at the sunset. Alex threw his hands over her shoulder and patted her. "It would be alright eve. I am there for you." Evelyn cried again. Maybe everything would be alright. Maybe she could start a new beginning. But the scar has been placed. She knew it would never go away.
