Chapter One

"Miss, where will you go?" The doctor asked, concerned with my state of health as I was about to leave the sterilised room that I had occupied for the last week.

"Far away." I spoke, with no tone to my voice.

I got a cab and told them my address until seeing cops surrounding the door and rooms. I just wanted to leave.

"Miss, why are you here?" A man asked, the same one who asked questions about what had happened.

"I came to get my stuff, I'm leaving California." I said, getting the suitcase I had packed the night it all happened. It had everything I owned. I got another suitcase and packed all my other stuff, my purse with my money, and my ticket to New York all there.

"Do you need to get dropped of at the airport?" A woman asked. I nodded, not wanting to be anywhere alone. Even if I was putting everybody around me at risk, I needed to concentrate on myself; as I know, selfish.

I have an apartment in New York, which I bought when I had been planning to leave. It's a two bedroom apartment in the center of New York with all its businesses. It was perfect for a fresh start, a brand new life.

I got dropped off and put my luggage on the plane. I went to the bathroom to see myself. I had bags under my eyes and I was skinnier than before, with all the hospital food not helping. My red hair coming in my eyes. It is a terrible hair colour, dark but still looking red and not brown. It's in the middle and I hate it. My green eyes stand out throughout my face. I have hardly any freckles and the ones I do, you can hardly see. I look average, but underneath the boredom is a suffering woman.

I was just a normal 23 year old redhead from California who had had a hell of a life! I'm normal, and that's what scared me.

I walked out and went to find a place where I could get breakfast. I delved into my food, not caring if people saw as my appetite taking over my whole body. Hearing the airline number, I walked in the line getting onto the now packed plane.

The plane ride was mostly me sleeping. I have been sleeping for the last week, but I feel so tired. I sit near the window, with an elderly lady next to me. I woke up halfway through the trip and saw the lady knitting a scarf or jumper.

"Hi." I said to her, being polite.

"Hello, dear, how are you?" She asked nicely.

"I'm good. How are you?" I asked back to her.

"Good, why are you going to the city that never sleeps?" She seemed sweet and really nice.

"To have a fresh start," I said back to her, "I have my new life set up there."

"That's nice, I'm seeing my grandson." She said to me, "this is for him." I realised it was Christmas jumper.

"I'm sure he'll love it." I said politely back to her. "My names Amber." I said, putting my hand out.

"Lily." She said back and shook my hand. She had the atmosphere of a sweet lady that you instantly knew would be nice to you. I talked to her through the rest of the flight, and we exchanged numbers in case we would want to meet up.

I would definitely want to meet up with her for a coffee. We parted ways, and I got a cab to my apartment. There was some traffic, as my apartment was very central. I hate traffic and I am not a patient person. Driving, I saw cars either driving very slow or very fast.

I walked to the lobby and saw a nice lady there. We both went up.

"You new?" She asked, her black hair went up to her shoulders, whilst I had butt length hair, which was put in a ponytail.

"Yeah, 24B." I said to her, as the elevator was moving up.

"Seems like we're neighbours, I'm 24A." She said putting her hand out.

"Seems like we are. The name's Amber." I said and shook her hand.

"Isabelle, but you can call me Izzy." She said with a smile.

"Well, Izzy, would you like to come over later and we can a watch a movie on tv or on my laptop." I said to her. I need to make friends because it would help a lot to have a friend in this city. She looks like someone you could trust and if I can't, well I had a knife.

"Sure." She said, and we walked to our apartments.

All the furniture was already there, the TV was set up, my room had a bed and sheets, and so did the guest. My room had an en suite and there was a bathroom. The kitchen was filled with bowls and cutlery. I had made sure everything was set up before I came, as I wanted to delve into my new life and job and not worry about unpacking.

I started unpacking my clothes. I had taken everything I owned from California. I ordered some pizza and got a two cans of coke from the fridge. I would have to go buy some food, seeing as my fridge only had coke and beer.

I set up my Netflix on the TV and rang my best friend.

"Lucy!" I screamed through the phone.

"Amber!" She screamed back. "How's New York?!" She screamed again.

"It is amazing! I've been here for an hour and I've already made a friend." I said, talking about Izzy.

"Cool, are you gonna tell her about what happened?" Lucy asked.

"I just want to forget about it." I said, trying to push those memories out.

"When do you start the job?" Lucy asked, trying to forget the question.

"I start on Monday." I replied. It's currently Friday and I had applied for a job at a high school as a English Teacher, which I had got. I love English and children, so I thought teaching would be good.

"I have to go, Ben is here." She said good bye and hung up. Ben is her boyfriend who she's been dating since high school. It was a very serious relationship and I had hoped and prayed he would finally pop the question. But whenever I did ask, he always averted the question and started talking about other stuff.

The doorbell went off and I already hated the sound, knowing I would have to change it soon. It was probably Izzy or the pizza. Either one would be great.
