“I don’t think so,” I said crossing my arms.
The bell just rang at Summerview High, signalling freedom to all its students.
Well, except for me.
I was in my least favourite class with my least favourite teacher and he was just telling me I had to partner up with my least favourite classmate.
Mr. Matthews sighed, leaned against his desk and said, “Look Silver, you don’t really have much of a choice in this. You’re failing math.”
“And science, and history, and English. I'm stupid, what’s your point?” I said haughtily.
“You’re not stupid, just lazy,” He said looking at me from above his glasses. “You’re failing these classes because you don’t bother showing up to them. Look, I won’t have you failing my class. This is an easy assignment, just find seven parabolas in your everyday surroundings and you’ll pass. Your partner is Chase Court and that is final.”
“This is total and utter bull!” I shouted, and stomped to the door.
“You’ll thank me later,” He said confidently, “They always do.”
“Yeah, sure, and I’ll be wearing a smile on my face too, right?” I said sarcastically.
“Let’s not push our luck, just pass this class and I’ll be happy,” He grinned.
“Whatever,” I opened the door and walked out only to bump into-
Oh great.
“Hey, I'm happy to see you too!” Chase said cheerfully in response to my glare.
“Get lost, Court,” I grumbled and headed for my locker.
He caught up to me and said, “I believe you’re supposed to thank me for accepting Matthews’ offer in helping you bump your math grade up.”
I ignored him and sped my pace up.
“Aw come on, don’t be like that!” He grinned matching my pace.
I reached my locker and started turning the lock when he grabbed my hand, making me freeze.
”Look,” he said, suddenly serious, “Believe it or not, I genuinely want to help you.”
“And I genuinely want to clock you in the face but that’s not going to happen either!” I said cheerfully, snatching my hand away.
“Ah, always the trooper, Silver. Well, get your stuff ready, we’re heading to the park as soon as you’re ready. I’ll be at the front gates,” He winked and sauntered off.
I glared daggers at his big, annoyingly muscular back.
Cocky jerk.
I leaned against my locker, closed my eyes and groaned my frustration.
So what if I'm failing all these classes? Who cares? They won’t get me anywhere! It’s not like I plan to use trig when buying a bagel at Tim Horton’s, or facts on Henry the Eighth when I'm trying to talk myself out of getting a ticket for speeding. No one understands what I've been going through.
I started thinking about my life and how much it’s changed these last few years. I lost my best friend Kelly three summers ago when she kept trying to hook me up with this guy in her drama club. My fists still clench at the nerve of her. How dare she think I wanted anything to do with some weirdo who enjoys wearing tights and dancing around a stage looking like fool? Or any guy in this school at all as a matter of fact. The last time I had a crush on a guy was-
