It was a chilly, silent night in the camp. Everyone was either asleep or just leaving to head to their tents. Just hours before, there had been loud cheering and chattering as the tribe members hustled around, stuffing themselves with the delicious food. Nora, only 7 years old, sat alone in the now empty camp, leaning back on a tree stump with her legs propped up on the other stump beside her. She swiped her dark brown hair out from her face and lazily shifted to the side.
She yawned and stretched out her legs, getting ready to stand up to head back to her tent. She flicked her fox ears and stood up, but just then she heard upcoming footsteps. Nora quickly jumped behind a tree and waited curiously. Crow, a young male tribe member, was heading into the leader's tent, looking quite worried. He ran his hands through his pitch black hair nervously while he muttered to himself.
Nora always thought Crow was one of the nicest, most intelligent member of the tribe there was other than Zeus, the leader, of course. Maybe that's why he always hustles round, following Zeus. He will probably be leader one day. Nora thought to herself, still peaking around the tree to see what was happening.
After a minute or two in the tent, Zeus came hustling out with Crow by his side.
"Crow, get Ava and the rest of the hunting group. They should be back from.." Zeus's voice faded away into the forest, and Nora crept from her hiding spot, shooting suspicious glances around the deserted camp.
Turning into her true form, a fox with water drops that followed her everywhere, Nora slipped into the shadows of the trees and followed Crow's and Zeus's scent trail. After trailing them for about 5 minutes, they emerged into a clearing with a huge rock in the middle and a fire to the side. Nora watched carefully as Zeus and Crow headed into a tent on the other side of the clearing.
Glancing around again, Nora noticed about 15 people quietly arguing and mumbling to each other around the fire. Creeping closer, she saw her mom among the group along with some hunters and other random adults in the tribe. Also among the group stood a tall, male adult, that Nora recognized as Flint. Nora hissed silently to herself at the thought of his cold piercing gray eyes and snarky grin.
After waiting a few minutes, Zeus and Crow finally emerged from the tent on the side of the clearing followed by Ava and Zeus's wife, Destiny. Watching and listening carefully, Nora saw Zeus take his place in the front of the crowd.
"As some of you may know, there has been a boy found in the forest by our hunting group.." Zeus motioned to Crow since he was the 'leader' of the hunting patrol. "It is most likely that we will bring him here in camp and feed and rest him, then ask about his tribe if he was in one,"
Suddenly, a cold hoarse voice spoke up. "Your thinking of keeping this 'boy'? He is probably a spy, there's no way we-" He was quickly interrupted by Zeus silencing him with the raise of his hand.
"We will feed and rest this boy, Flint." Zeus boomed, holding his yellowish-hazel eyes with Flint's. Flint growled and spun around on his heel, stalking away quite angrily.
"We will discuss more in the morning," Zeus announced right after Flint was out of sight.
Everyone in the group dispersed and headed back to their tent, muttering to each other. Nora watched as Zeus mumbled something to Crow, and Crow and Ava headed to the big tent to the side. Now, Zeus was the only one left in the deserted clearing. He quickly turned around and scanned the bushes around where Nora was. She froze and held her breath as he lifted his hand. Before she could react, a piece of earth pushed the fox-Nora out into the open.
"Hello, Nora. Listing in on our meeting, I suspect?"
