They went belowdecks through small corridors to get the boys room. A gaunt, hollow-eyed sailor was in their room with three other boys. "We're all supposed to sleep here?" Peter asked as we ducked into the room.

All the boys in the room rushed to Peter, save for James, who was still clinging to Mara's arm, which was starting to go numb.

"Oh, you'll be glad you're close together, keeps you warm." The sailor said.

"But it smells." The short and slightly tubby boy, crinkled his nose.

"It does?" The man sniffed. "Not so's I can tell. Anyways, you get used to it."

"They shouldn't have to." Mara growled at the sailor. He ignored her and pointed to the crockery pot in the corner. "I put your dinner in the corner, there, you eat once a day, and you want to eat it right quick when I brings it, or the rats'll get it first."

The boys gathered around the pot, even James, who had tugged Mara with him. "Where's the plates? And spoons?" A different boy asked.

The sailor grabbed the wall to keep himself upright as he began to laugh. "Plates! Spoons!"

"Then how do we eat?" The same boy asked.

"Like the rest of us, with your hands." The sailor grinned.

Mara scoffed. "That's not how normal people eat."

The tubby boy, cupped his hands into the liquid. He took a lump into his mouth for a second before spitting it out. "IT'S ALIVE!" He screeched.

"You ain't gonna eat this?" The sailor asked. The boy shook his head violently. "Your loss," The boys and Mara watched slack-jawed as he popped the worm into his mouth and chewed. "Moth maggot, I prefers fly, but moth is good, too"

The boy who had the displeasure to put the worm in his mouth turned away retching. "You eat worms?" Peter asked.

"I eats what I can on this ship," the sailor started. Mara wasn't listening. She whispered in James's ear that she was going to go looking for the galley to bring these boys some food.

Rather reluctantly, he let go of her arm and watched he leave, but not before she whispered to him one last thing. "I will be back, and with proper food."

Mara left the tiny cabin to go looking for the galley. When she did find it, she had to scoff at what the cook was doing. He was sitting on top of a barrel, and was staring her down, daring her to touch the barrel.

She gave him a wide birth and began to bustle around the kitchen. As Mara was unable to find the silverware, real silverware, she simply put together lots and lots of sandwiches.

Well, she didn't really make them. She grabbed two loafs of pre-cut bread, an assortment of meats, and plenty of different spreads on a plate with a plastic knife for each spread.

With food in hand, she made her way back to the boys cramped cabin. "Knock, knock." She grinned as she passed through the doorway. "I wasn't sure what all of you liked, so I figured I'd grab it and you could make them your own way."

She set the plate down in the middle of the boys, then handed off the bread and meat to Peter who began to pass it around. Everyone took two slices of bread, -the extra was set aside- and began to make their sandwiches. Mara was about to creep out of the room, when James called out to her, "Why don't you stay?"

"Well, I just figured that-" Mara started to say.

"Stay, please" James looked up at her.
