"Get away from me!" I yelled."Ha! Not likely!" yelled the biggest bully. I wasn't going to get out of this mess. I closed my eyes and braced myself to be thrown across the alley. All of the sudden I heard whimpering and the bullies were gone. I lifted my paws off my snout and looked around. Nothing was there except muddy paw prints and a curious shadow. I considered investigating, but then it was gone. I decided the events of this evening was causing hallucinations.
Being a small Yorkshire Terrier in a big town was not easy. I knew that I was a dog that most people wanted, which meant I had to stay well hidden. I had been owned once, and that is not an experience I ever want to relive again.
I ventured back to my little home. The little cardboard box was more of a home than any lavish home had ever been or ever would be. I first checked the dumpster for any pizza crusts and then curled up in my little box behind the dumpster next to the heating vent. I relaxed. As I gnawed on my scraps, I considered the shadow. I could not remember when and how but I had seen that shadow before.
