There he was again, turning the corner with his backpack, everyone moving out of his way, giving him wary looks. He was the new kid, with earrings, slanted bangs and dressed in all black with the occasional leather or studs, at a high school filled with goody two shoes rich kids. Everyone was scared of him, but I found him fascinating.
"Hey, one second," I said to my friends and hurried my pace before they could ask questions. I quickly rounded the corner that he had just turned. I could see him ahead of me. I was going away from where I should have been and I knew I would be late to class. No one was ever late to class here, no one. But then I caught up to him. I slowed my pace and walked awkwardly right behind him.
He was tall, very tall. Someone had told me he was a junior. I was only a sophomore. I pondered my choices. I could turn around and maybe make it to class on time, or I could actually say hello to him. My heart started beating harder but I sped up a tiny bit until I was walking beside him. He didn't look at me. I took a deep breath.
"Hey"
He looked over at me, seemingly startled, but didn't stop walking. I was starting to have trouble keeping up with his long strides. Then he just stared at me, not saying anything.
"Hey," I tried again.
"Hey," this time he replied.
"What's your name?" I asked, not sure what else to say.
"Dan," he replied, still staring at me. "Yours?"
"Ariana," I said. He had dark chocolate eyes. "Are you new here?" I asked like an idiot.
Obviously he was new, everyone knew that he was new, but I literally had no idea what to say.
"Yeah," he replied. "But you already know that, don't you." The first bell went off.
I looked down sheepishly. My plan at conversation had already failed.
"Yeah," I admitted. "I do."
"Listen," he said suddenly, stopping and pulling me to the side of the hallway roughly. I gasped, suddenly slightly afraid of how he had gotten physical so unexpectedly. "I hate this place. Everyone's so perfect and rich. Me, I'm just a normal kid, but no, not here. Here I'm a freak. And I hate it here, so know that I won't be staying long." I looked up at him, shaken.
"I-I'm sorry," I stuttered. "I really am." I didn't know what else to say. I was a rich kid, and I was always perfect, or at least tried to be.
"Meet me at the flagpole after school, I'll take you somewhere," and then he left, just walked away down the hallway without another glance. Then the second bell went off, as well as my reputation.
I got to class late, as I knew I would. I had never been late to class before, and when I got to the room, I stood awkwardly outside the door for way longer than I should have. I finally worked up the courage and pushed the door open. Suddenly everyone turned and looked at me. Even Ms. Suffridge stopped teaching to stare at me.
"Ariana," she suddenly said, her voice clipped and stern. "Why are you late?"
"I'm so sorry," I scrambled to make up an excuse. "I dropped my backpack in the hall and all of my papers flew out on the floor. It took me forever to pick them up."
"Well then," Ms. Suffridge eyed me suspiciously, obviously not believing my excuse. "I suppose I'll let it go, just don't let it happen again." And then it was all over, and I walked to my seat breathing a sigh of relief. She obviously didn't believe me, but it was better than getting a referral.
"Ari," my best friend Lily hissed at me when I sat down. "Where were you really?"
"Lily!" Ms. Suffridge snapped. This shut Lily up, saving me the stress of making up yet another excuse on the spot.
Then I got to thinking.
What had I done?! The "dangerous" new boy just said he'd take me somewhere with him. Alone, with him. This could NOT be anything good. Or could it?
