My heels clicked against the polished wood of the hospital floors. The sounds bounced of the walls and echoed down the narrow halls. A trail of blood painted crimson splatters behind my path and my sopping wet dress stickily clung to me. I reached up to my hair, dirt and grit fell to the floor and a sudden coughing fit ripped at my lungs and throat. The sweet metallic taste of blood lingered in my mouth, but it wasn't mine, was it?. The lights flicked ahead and the door that read 'operating theatre' loomed above them. He's got to be in here. My thoughts were jumbled, a mess of missing pieces of what happened to me half an hour ago. Dark alley way, street light.. the wet ground and the rain bucketing down on my cream dress. My heels sinking slightly into the soft earth. Five men in leather jackets came out of no where, knives reflecting the harsh moonlight into my eyes. Pain.... darkness. And then, high off yin fen I woke up alone and cold, I carried my tired body across the dark road towards the hospital. It was Destry's vamps that attacked me in the alley way. I touched my neck and flinched in pain. They couldn't of... I glanced down at my wrists and was overwhelmed at the sight of many bite marks that covered my skin. My body went hot then cold and the hall spun and the clicking of heels turned to a light thud as I fainted.
Sunlight bit into my eyes. The ripping noise of curtains being drawn fast drew my senses closer too the surface. My lips quivered and my entire body ached. Where am I? Slowly opening an eye I looked dazed around the plain room. There was an empty hospital bed by the door and a drip stuck in my arm. A small nurse stood by my side changing the liquids. An addictive sent came from her. It made my dry mouth full with saliva and my stomach rumbled. My mouth started moving.. "How.... long have I, been here?" My voice cracked. The nurse who had picked up a pillow to puff was startled, she turned dropping it onto the tiles. "Oh my, I'm sorry dear I didn't realise you where awake... we found you in the hall way last night, where you visiting someone dear? you must of fainted at the sight of all the blood in the hall. Sorry about that, one of our patients is a bit of a handful, its fake blood you see, he hasn't done that in ages..." she goes quiet and looks behind her. "I should go tell the doctor your awake." Clumsily, she picks up the pillow and puts it onto the bed and scuttles out the door. I sigh and move my arm out from under the blanket. My body was glamoured so Mundanes couldn't see things we didn't want them to see. The bites all up my arms had almost disappeared, but the one on my neck was going to scar. How much yin fen did I end up enduring? I craved it and it made me sick. I felt my old addictions kicking in. It had taken me ages to rid my body of that evil stuff. Yin fen was vampire venom, and it is absolutely illegal down in the shadow realm. Like drugs for humans.. It was my boyfriend at the time when I was mundane who introduced me to it, sold in the markets for high marks for its nepenthe. And foolishly like a lamb falling into a trap, I blindly fell into its sticky web. Now I'm feeling the after math of what the source of it does. Like fire burning through my veins when movement was too fast, clouded mind and worst of all, what would happen to me if the clave saw me like this? It was them in the first place who saved me from it... I pulled my arm back under the covers.. this time it wasn't my fault. I was pulled out of my thoughts when a familiar sent wafted into my room followed by the tall lanky figure in a black jacket, turned and leaned on the frame of the door. His red hair was gelled back and his hazel eyes burned into mine in remorse, and in a whisper I managed.. "James Artiness". Another man rushed pass him and the nurse came in with my stuff.
"Victoria Blossom? Im doctor Richard how are you feeling?" James watched from the door way completely glamoured.
"Im fine," I lied sitting up and feeling the burning in my veins again. "Can I go?" I asked as I pulled the drip from my arm. "Wait a second, I just need a check up, you hit your head pretty hard last night." He shone a soft torch in my eye and then the other. The nurse put my things on my bed.
"You can get dressed and we will have you discharged before you know it." The doctor flicked off the torch and moved the stand away, taking away the drip. I picked up my torn dress and bloody shoes. My purse was wet but the contents thankfully weren't. "Thanks" I said and got up. Fire burned in my legs but I bit down on my cheek and walked out into the corridor with James following close behind me.
The cool air around me was kind on my skin. The smell of Petrichor in the earth played with soft notes of other scents. We had just left the hospital and James had asked me why I hadn't of come to the institute instead of a mundane hospital. "I don't know, I guess my old life senses kicked in.... I'm still getting used to this" every step was slightly less painful, but I knew the worst was to come. "So what happened last night....?" James stopped and looked up at me, his eyes melting in the sun. I turned to speak out towards the street to hide my face behind my knotted hair keeping my voice low and even. "I can barely remember..."
"Try too" James grabbed my shoulders and forced me to look into the gates of heaven. The gates I knew I could never explore past.
"I... there where 5 of them, Destry's.. I can remember them approach me in the alley way, and then I was in pain on the ground... and then.." I stopped and quickly pulled up my dress. A giant pentagram was cut into my stomach. James ran his fingers over the already scared lines. "Why haven't they healed?" he whispered.
"They had demon blades.." my voice broke.
"Are you in any pain?" we never broke eye contact until then.
"No" I stood in silence, drooping my torn dress down again and de - glamourising myself completely. The bite marks were visible for James to see. HIs eyes furrowed in pain.
"Elizabeth i'm so sorry I wasn't there in time to get you."
I breathed out a quiet sob as his arms wrapped around me and I fell into him.
"It hurts so much....." I whispered as I could feel the start of my body trying to rid the venom. My arm started shaking and every little movement was like icy fire.
"No one can see me like this." My voice quivered and I felt myself being picked up. It felt weird how people were walking past us, without a clue of our existence. Just carrying on in their busy lives. They never knew what kind of world they lived in.
I buried my face into his chest and closed my eyes.
