I sat with my mother in our living room, quietly listening to the soft noise of the radio. The constant static drove me ears away, but it was the only sound to block out the storm going on around us.
"Hey Mama..?" I called out, as if a student in a vacant classroom hoping for some assistance.
"Yes?"
"What if Papa get stuck in this here storm we're havin'."I ask, nervously.
"Papa wouldn't get stuck in a storm like this. He's a smart man darlin'."
"Alright.."
We sat in silence for the next few minutes neither of us decided to speak a word, we just listened to the news, music, and storm brewing outside.
Hours later, it finally stopped and we were able to continue taking care of the animals and field.
"Darlin' go check on the animals outback, make sure they all have food, water, and are safe." She commanded. I went, doing as mother said came naturally. She didn't ask much of me and when she did, it wasn't too difficult to take care of. Besides, Mama has always been really nice to me, so I always thought it was best to be respectful to her. Plus if I were to get mad at Mama, then I'd be doing more chores. Nonetheless, I made my way to the back area of the plains and opened the large red door in front of me.
I walk in, Shenn following behind me, and after I stopped, he had jumped onto my shoulder. His tail swayed back and forth on my back, as if rubbing it to make me feel better after a giant tragedy. Shenn always listened to me, whether he understood or not, it didn't bother me. He was the one person- thing?- I told everything to, and he always seemingly listened. A small smile tugged onto my face, making me continue to move. All the animal looked fine, so I head back home, even racing Shenn at one point.
When I got home, the mail cart had been here, I ran up.
"Hello Mr Patters! Any new mail today for Mama or me?"
"In fact yes, Lilac." He dug through the bin of letters and took at one, handing it to me.
"It's actually for both of you." He spoke with a smile. "I have to continue down the road, I'll see you next time, Li!" He said waving and making the horses go. I waited him to leave and then bolted into my house, running up to Mama.
"Mama! Mama!! We got a letter from the city! It's from Papa!"
She took the letter immediately, reading through it. Her face slowly dissolved as she read the note.
"What is it Mama..?" I cautiously asked.
"Your father is going to take longer.."
