"All right! I got it!" Gon shouted cheerfully. Gon and I were fishing by the lake in the woods near his aunt Mito's house. Things were more peaceful here compared to the Celestial Tower Tournament we had just returned from. After Gon placed his most recent catch in a bucket with the other fish he had caught earlier, he handed me the fishing rod.
"Here, Killua. You can try now!" he said with a smile.
"Okay," I said as I cast the line into the water. A few seconds later, a fish took the bait and I reeled it in.
"Wow! That fish is even bigger than the ones I caught. You're amazing, Killua!" Gon exclaimed with admiration. I felt my face turn red.
"Don't say stuff like that! It's embarrassing," I said, even though I liked hearing Gon's compliments.
Gon and I decided to build a campfire so we could cook all of the fish we had caught. As we finished building it, the sun began to set. Gon and I started cooking the fish as we watched the sunset.
I had never had any friends before meeting Gon. I was too busy being an assassin. I didn't want to be one, though. My parents raised me that way because that's how they were raised when they were younger. When I wasn't killing people, I was being whipped, beaten, poisoned, and even electrocuted by my own family. If they could even be called that. I never felt close to any of them. For all I know, I could have been living with complete strangers.
Most of them didn't even look like me. Aside from my father and grandfather, I was the only one with silver hair. Everyone's else's hair was black, like the darkness that surrounded them.
But Gon was different. He accepted me for who I was. Even though I had killed so many people, he wasn't afraid of me. His hair was also black, but it was a warm darkness. No, it was more like a light. It blocked out the darkness in me. I gladly accepted his friendship, and since then, we've been through a lot together. More than anything, I wanted to stay by his side. But would he stay with me?
Once we finished eating dinner, I noticed Gon was looking at me. "Is something wrong?" Gon asked.
"Gon, you'll always be here, right?" I asked.
"Of course! You're my best friend, Killua. I love you, and I want us to be together forever!"
My face was almost as red as the flames from the campfire.
"Gon...I-" I tried to say before being interrupted as a figure popped out of the bushes behind us.
"Mito-san! What are you doing here?" Gon asked.
"I'm glad I finally found you two. It's getting late. You two should get back to the house and get ready for bed," she said.
Why did we have to set the campfire up so close to Mito's house?! If we had picked a spot in the woods that was farther away, Mito wouldn't have been able to find us, and I could've told Gon how I felt. Then again, maybe it was better this way. I couldn't figure out a good way to put my feelings into words, and even if I could, it would be kind of embarrassing to talk about them. It's no like I have to tell him my feelings right now anyway, right? When the time's right, I'll tell him. And then maybe we will be together forever.
