prologue

The proximity of our bodies is so close; I can actually feel how well they actually fit together. I look up into his green eyes and I can’t help but watch the fear dance within them.

“Should I be afraid?” I quietly whisper to him as we lay cocooned in a mess of a blanket. He closes his eyes at my words, shutting them tightly as he tries to make his decision on how to reply.

“Yes, you should.” He finally sighs at me, opening his eyes again and staring down at me. “Stel?”

“Yes?” I whisper even quieter than before, now I knew that there truly was danger to come.

“I need you to know that I never wanted you to be a part of this. This was my battle.” I could hear the anguish in his voice as he whispered the words to me. I couldn’t help but think of a small broken boy as I heard the cracks in his voice, heard the pain he was full of. “This all would have been so much easier for you if you had never met me.”

“Don’t you dare say that, you would never be in this position if it wasn’t for me.” I still find the anger in me to whisper with the conviction I need. “No one should fight something this strong by themselves.”

“Obviously that is easier said than done, you shouldn’t be here right now.” He sighed at me, making me furrow my eyebrows at him once again.

“Dammit you make it so hard for someo-“ He cut off my words with a kiss and I narrowed my eyes at him. “You’re really lucky I can’t punch you right now; don’t ever try to kiss me when we are arguing. You hear me?”

“Yes Stella I hear you.” He laughed quietly as he snuggled even closer to me. “Can we please just enjoy this moment together?”

“Fine.” I breathed out, nestling my head into the crook of his neck.

“And Stella?” He whispered to me again and I looked back up at him, for what felt like the thousandth time.

“Yes?”

“You’re cute when you’re mad.” He whispered into my neck, sending chills up my back, “And I am going to protect you until I can’t.” I stared at him, lightly pecking his cheek before I continued to keep the form our two bodies made intact. The moment couldn’t be more perfect unless the imminent danger that was looming over us as we lay on the couch.

And then, that moment ended.
