Okay, this book is kind of confusing so I'm gonna explain a little because you're all commenting a lot of questions, basically joey wasn't brought up like an average child because Daniel had been raising him. Daniel kid napped him at birth, he'd been craving a brand new toy. Daniel has been treating him like a baby his whole life so that explains why he is kin of like a little but he's not. He's acting like a child because he's being treated as a child his whole life.
Daniel is kinky as fuck, he takes pleasure in hurting/torturing/shoving random shit up joeys ass...
Okay now that that is covered hope has been Daniels "friend" since they  were kids but the only reason she has sticked around is to look after joey because she feel bad for him ( I mean common sense )
