**not fully edited, wanted to get it out asap**
My thoughts were focused solely on one thing as I tidied the dorm with Claire: what happened last night?
I kept asking myself the same question, as if maybe I would get the answer.
"Adeline!" Claire snaps.
"Jeez. What's wrong with you?" I say to her as I turn around to open the window, allowing a cool summer breeze to flow through the room.
"I said you're name like fifty times." She says tensely.
"Oh. Sorry Claire, my mind isn't really up to multi tasking today..." I mumble as I take a purple tshirt with the Hero Academy logo out of my drawer.
I then grab a pair of black running shorts and go into the bathroom to change. Claire talking to me through the door the whole time.
I heave a big sigh as I step out to brush my teeth, "I told you Claire, if I could tell you then I would, but I don't even know what's going on!" I tell her, feeling stressed.
"So you're just going to lie to my face then? Fine. I thought we told each other everything, but clearly I was wrong..." she says angrily as she steps into the toilet room to change.
I rinse and spit, bracing myself with my hands on the counter top as I sigh.
I get my makeup out of its bag and sloppily begin to put it on.
When Claire comes out she rushes past me in a blur of green and red.
Her long red hair falls straight down her back, free from the ponytail I know she's about to put it in.
"Claire..." I begin and slowly turn around.
Except I am greeted with only the sound of the breeze coming in my room from the open window.
She left.
She just walked out of the dorm without a second thought. Her hair wasn't even put up.
I frustratedly finish my makeup and look in the mirror at myself. I have tan, olive colored skin and long brown hair that falls in gentle waves down my back, I'm the average height for my age and I have brown eyes. I put the final touches of mascara on my lashes and then head out the door with my book bag.
I have 5 minutes to get down there on time. Usually I leave with Claire 15 minutes early to avoid the traffic and to have more time to eat before school starts. But today I'm late by just 5 minutes and it's a mess. We only have 10 tubes that hold 5 people, 7 if you try really hard, and we have 90 floors. So you can imagine the insane amount of traffic to get on a tube in the morning.
They go pretty fast though, they don't have railings to hold onto when you ride them because it's just a glass platform surrounded by a tube. When I first rode one as a kid I flew up into the air as the platform beneath me fell. I still get lifted up sometimes and get the butterfly feeling in my stomach.
The tubes are filled with people trying to fit eight to a tube as they drop a couple floors to the bottom.
The older you get the higher up your dorm floor is. For fifteen year olds we're on 67-69, I'm on the middle floor.
I jump in a line to get on the tube and I sigh and run my head in frustration. From up here I can't see Claire and I'm going to have to sit alone like the loser I am.
I hear someone say my name and turn to look in that direction.
Instead of seeing Claire's face I see two random girls I've never seen before snickering at me. They get in a tube with a few other people and tauntingly wave goodbye as they go down the tube.
Finally it's my turn to get on the tube, I step on with a few other people who are too busy talking to each other to notice me. I sigh with relief as the tube closes and we drop to the main floor in a matter of seconds. The tube opens and I frantically look around for Claire.
My heart sinks to the pit of my stomach when I see her across the lunch room, not even sitting at our table.
My thoughts are interrupted by the sound of the microphone turning on.
Everyone looks up to the nearest speaker in surprise, usually all announcements are taken care of in the morning.
"I apologize for the inconvenience, but will Adeline Jones please come to my office now. I have breakfast prepared for you." Then the speaker cuts off and everyone turns their attention to me. I feel my cheeks turn hot with embarrassment as I turn around and walk to the far right tube, the only one that takes you to her office and the only one that isn't programmed to go only to the main floor during breakfast hours.
I place my hand on the scanner and select floor 87. The swooshing sound of the platform coming down alerts me that it's time.
I step on and hold my breath as the platform lifts me up to one of the highest floors.
As I stand in from of the tall, mahogany, doors I take a deep breath in and then exhale as I knock.
Seconds later the doors open to reveal a large space with high, vaulted ceilings and long windows allowing lots of natural light to flood the room.
I walk to the center of the room and turn to the right to be met by two icy blue eyes. With each step closer that she took, her daggers were piercing deeper and deeper into me.
"I'm glad you could make it." She says lightly, "come. I want to show you something."
With that, she walks away, her long hair tied up neatly into a bun.
She grabs a key and we walk through a door at the back of her office and into a small library. In the now unlocked library are old books piled high. None of them are colorful, or at least not anymore.
There are square windows at the top of the circular room allowing me to see just how much dust was in the room.
The screeching sound of a ladder being dragged across the floor interrupted my thoughts about the disheveled room.
The head mistress climbed up the ladder and grabbed an old yet shiny, wooden box. She took another key out from somewhere and then climbed down. She placed the box on the table in the center of the room and I slowly walked up to her.
The clicking sound was heard and moments later the squeaking sound of the box opening, made my feet move closer to the table than before.
Inside was a large book, the only book in this room that wasn't covered in heaps of dust.
The book was red and huge. The cover read, "The History of the Fae"
"What's this?" I asked the mistress while examining the book, realizing just how old it was.
"The answer."
