The streets were dark and so was her heart. As she walked along those streets, late at night, she waited for that one phone call from him. That one call he would make every day, telling her to wait at the nearest bus stop. Telling her to wait for him to pick her up. She was ready to go as soon as he called her, except, the call never came.
She waited for it every day, just to realize that he was never going to call her again. That she was never going to her his voice again. That she could never look into his eyes and see him looking back with those twinkling grey eyes of his. And these realizations just made it all worse. They made her live through all of it once again. They made her realize once again, what a horrible person she was.
It all happened about a month ago. He was driving her home from another one of her performances. She didn't know how to drive and so, he would drive her everywhere, every day. She felt bad for doing that to him, but he always brushed her apologies off, saying that these drives only gave him more time to spend with her. He was laughing at the blush that spread across her face and she was trying her best to hold back a smile. He looked at her with those amazing grey eyes and she looked right back.
That was when it happened.
Another car came swerving down the lane which made her wonder whether the driver was drunk. She screamed, bringing him out of his reverie, while his eyes went back to the road.
But it was too late.
She couldn't do anything but sit there while the car crashed right into them. She couldn't help but rush out of the room the next day when she woke up in a hospital, dragging along with her all the machines that were attached to her. She couldn't say anything but,"Where is he? Is he alright?" She couldn't help but break down the moment she was told the truth. The moment she was told that he was no more.
It turned out that it had already been a week since the accident and his funeral was the day before. She couldn't even be there with him for the last time.
It had been almost a month, but the memories of that night were clear as day. He was the last person she had, and it hurt to know that she had killed the love of her life. She regretted everything she did that night. But most of all, she regretted not smiling. She regretted not showing him that he was the only one who made her truly happy. And as time passed, she regretted her existence.
Days went by and the number of people apologizing, decreased. They thought that she was alright. That he died, while she survived with a few broken bones and scratches. But they never knew what happened after. They didn't know that hours after the incident, the doctors found a ring in his coat pocket. They didn't know that the ring had her name on it. They didn't know that the doctors gave it to her, the day she woke up. They didn't know what the ring on her finger meant to her. They didn't know that it was the last present he'd ever get for her. A ring that perfectly fit her ring finger.
As for her injuries, she might've gotten away with a few healing bones and scratches. But that night had created a void in her heart which could never be filled.
That night, when she slept, she dreamed of twinkling grey eyes.
