Chapter One

*~*W A R N I N G    C O N T E N T    I S    G R U E S O M E*~*

<<PAST>>

I pull the familiar bow back and it rests against my cheek. The world around me is dead. I'm focused only on my target. The wind whips my hair back and a take a deep breath. Then, I release. The arrow whooshes past me as I watch my target. The arrow hits the rabbit right through his eyes. I smile in satisfaction.

I walk over to the rabbit and pick it up by its ears. I rip the arrow back though his eyes and place it back in my bag on my back. I don't need to waste anymore arrows. It's too time consuming to make them and winter is coming. I start making my way back to the cave.

I've lived in the cave for as long as I can remember. It gets cold and hard in the winter but, I can always find reassurance in my cave. It's nice and hidden. The rocks and the area of the cave keep it hidden deep in the mountain.

I pass the river at the bottom of the mountain and I decide to wash off. I wash my hands, face, and feet in the cool water with a shiver. The afternoon sky sets in and I know it's time to leave. I'll properly wash tomorrow. I grab the bucket I keep hidden in a nearby tree and fill it with water. I put the rabbit in the bag with my arrows and carry the heavy bucket in my callused and blistered palms. I feel the pain and the cold but, I couldn't care less.

I make my way up the tall mountain and I finally see the cave. I quicken my pace once I see that the sun will be setting in less than an hour. The cave is just as I left it. I use my foot the kick my rock/door in. The heavy rock slowly rolls backwards and I step inside. I set my stuff down and roll the rock back so it closes off the entrance. I am engulfed by darkness and mentally curse myself.

I stumble my way through the dark, trying to find my old lantern. All the stuff I own is stuff I find in the woods from forgetful campers or hikers and I honestly couldn't be more grateful for their forgetfulness. I, for sure, would be dead without their help, even if they don't know. A lot of my supplies come from them. My clothes. My knives. My lantern. My shoes. My blankets. My bucket. Basically everything of value to me.

My hand finally lands on the rusty lantern and I fiddle with some of my supplies as I try to light the fire inside it. I finally get it to go and I sigh in relief. The room is now dimly lit but, it's enough for me. I walk over to my large pile of wood and I grab a few logs. I throw them onto my accumulating pile of what should be a fire pit. I fiddle again with my supplies until I get the fire going. The cave starts to warm and I can finally fully see.

I sit down next to the fire and take out the rabbit. I should save this but I haven't eaten in days and I need it now. I pull out my favorite knife and skill the rabbit. I finish and wash the rabbit with a towel that I dip into the bucket of water. Once the rabbit is clean I stab it into my stick and bring it over the fire. I occasionally twist the stick, cooking all sides of the meat. As it cooks I hang the fur on one of the out jetted rocks on the ceiling. I hope it will dry out, it'll make a great mitten if I sew it right and get another rabbit.

The smell is intoxicating and I can't keep my mouth from watering. I remove the rabbit from the fire and dig in. It tastes incredible, considering the circumstances. I try to savor it but I end up giving into my hunger and the rabbit disappears in moments. When I finish, I'm still hungry, but it'll have to do for now. I decide to step outside while I wait for the smell of rabbit to disappear. It's too teasing.

I pull my sweater close to my body as I climb up onto the cave. The night is clear but, the cold air nips at my face and through my thin clothing. Out in the distance I see the small cabin. The only habitation on this mountain. Nobody lives there and not many people rent it out, the cabin being too far from life.

Then something surprises me. I see a car pulling up the driveway to the cabin. Rephrase that, a white van pulling into the driveway. Five boys, and a woman carrying a baby step out of the Van and walk inside. One boy lingers on the porch.

My heart sinks to my feet and my biggest fear come reality. People. It's a ridiculous fear but I can't risk someone finding me. I'm so caught up in my own thoughts that I don't even hear the growling behind me. I'm such an idiot. The animal must've smelled the food. I am expecting a small dog but when I turn my head, my heart stops. I am met with deep green eyes that shine with hunger.

The mountain lion growls and I stay still, unsure of what to do. It's too late to come up with any idea before the mountain lion lunges forward and he bites onto my left leg. I scream out in horror and pain as I attempt to fight back. The lion growls and I kick him in the face with my right foot. His growl becomes louder and I scream in pain as his grip on my leg tightens.

I reach behind me and grab a big rock and slam it across the lions face. The lion falls to the side of the cave and I crawl for the cave. I make my way inside but I hear the padding of the lion feet behind me. I grab my knife and turn on my back. I see the lion running towards me and I hold my breath. The lion lunges and I don't hesitate to bring the knife to his chest. I find the heart and pierce it through the mountain lion’s chest. I hear the lion whine and I twist the knife. The lion’s lifeless body falls on top if me, the weight crushing me.

I push the lion off and dare to look at my throbbing leg. I instantly regret it. The blood gushes out of the deep wound. Flesh and muscle is torn from my leg, making my bone easily visible. The bone is cracked in the middle and I scream in pain as the tears fall from my face. I will never be able to fix this. Long story short, I will be dead if I don't get help. But, I can’t get help. Or, I will be found.

Before I can think of what to do I hear a sharp intake of breath and I look up where I am met with shocked deep blue eyes. The world starts spinning and I become extremely dizzy and nauseas. I begin to fall backwards when the boy rushes to my side. He begins to speak but I hear no words. All I see is his lips moving. I am lifted into the air and I am bounced around when he starts running. His blonde hair goes back in the wind. He is still talking and I still hear silence. Then, everything goes black.
